Squeaky vRS

Featured Replies

Does anyone else have a squeak from the front nearside of their octy?

mines a 2001 Y and it started squeaking at the weekend after some 'spirited' driving. It only seems to be noticeable when things are warmed up.

I've had both front wheels off and wd40'd all of the joints under there - everything looks clean and in good shape but that made no difference.

I also noticed it squeaks when I close the driver's door!

Further investigation seems to hint at the radiator / fan assembly being the culprit - I think it may have lost a bolt from somewhere as it seems to have quite a bit of free play in it and is squeaky/creaky when moved. It also stops the squeaking if someone holds onto it when the door is shut!

Anyone know where the fixings are for the radiator / fan assembly or how it's mounted? Hopefully I'll just need to tighten things up a bit.

Does it squeek if the road appears uneven, or going over speed bumps?

If so, it may be your ARB bushes that have gone. Same thing happened to me. If your car seems to also develop a rattle while driving, a drop link has also gone.

I'm actually going for my car in a few minutes as it got a rattle a few days ago, and one of the links has gone.

It's more noticeable on uneven surfaces, mostly at low speeds but there's no sound on bouncing the suspension when stationary. The sound is only reproduced when the fan housing / radiator is given a good rattle. Seems weird to me though - I would have gone for tie bar od ARB bushes as a first option.

I get one from my dash, annoying little bugger at times

Is it the platic covering the speedo etc? Mine does it, got a piece of paper folded over wedged in a gap to stop it moving......

Ol!ver, mine seems to be on the lower right hand side, if I push the right corner when its squeaks it stops I think its just a little movement from the unit {unless it falls off :rolleyes: }

It goes away completely when I turn the radio up :D

Has no-one else had a squeaky radiator/fan housing then? Interesingly it only happens when things get a bit hot - ie after a good thrashing and it was particularly noticeablw when I had the revo sample installed - presumably running a bit hotter with all that extra boost.

Yup, mine has the exact same symptoms. Took it back to the dealer to sort it out and they couldn't find anything (it didn't 'squeek' while it was there). You could be right about it only appearing after its been driven 'briskly' as mine never squeeks when cold...only after about 20 mins of driving. I have put up with it by turning the stereo up  . Maybe I should take it back to the dealers again now I have a clue where its coming from

Just done a forum search and found a couple of older threads about this - apparently squeaky radiator mounts has been a particular fault in Octy vRS's and a few people have either sorted their own or had it sorted under warranty. Unfortunately mine's out of warranty so I'll have to do it myself!

Took mine back to the dealers to get this sorted about 3 months after picking it up. They blamed it on the radiator mounting rubbers and changed them under warranty. Trouble is, three months on it's bac again

One of the threads on here suggested oiling the radiator locating lugs (that might not be the exact technical term BTW) so I'm going to try that this time. Although, taking it back to the dealers would involve another blast down the Mansfield bypass :) :drive:
