Why do I have a permant battery light on my dash

Featured Replies

Why do I have a permant battery light on the dash when the car starts fine and is running fine ???

Because the alternator isn't charging the battery perhaps?

Why did it snap? Worn belt or seized alternator pulley?

The belt itself is about a tenner off ebay as a guide, having similar probs but mine is a dead alternator(hopefully)

Think the pulleys are worn and just it off ripping it I'm just looking at the price of the fix times are hard and all that gotta ring the garage in the morning just wanted to get a few opinions first really ??

I'd be checking the one way alternator pulley.

If the belt didn't look too bad before this and you've been hearing noises etc. then I suspect that the alternator pulley freewheel has failed/seized and has caused the belt to shred/snap!! I believe the pulley can be replaced on its' own if it has failed.

Changing the alternator and belt is quite easy as im finding out, bit tight for space but doable, need 13,10 and 8mm spanners(at least on my 16v 1.4) plus I cant remember what size for the auto tensioner...sorry lol

On the 8v non a/c a belt set me back £8 from my local factor and fitting time was about 5 minutes. If you're doing the pulley it shouldn't add drastically to either the cost or the time but I know the 16v isn't quite as easy to work on as the 8v with it's acres of space under the bonnet.
