finaly understand heatsoak

Featured Replies

So i had an "interaction" with a feesty ST this morning. It had a bit of a head start and i caught up in no time so i had to lift off and when i went to overtake i just couldnt get past despite catching up with no problem atall.

So im guessing this was due to heatsoak at higher rpm

Looks like an uprated intercooler/radiator could be next on the list

ST could have been modified for performance mate

ST could well of been modded as a fair few are.

I notice the heat soak issues at 4th gear. Its as if theres plenty of power all the way through 1st - 3rd but as soon as it hits 4th theres a noticeable drop in oomph.

Saving up for the pace products & making plans for a co2 cooler for the intercooler, but im not so sure if its really worth the co2 cooler so undecided on venturing down that path yet.

even modified the ST Fiestas dont really get to much more power. A heavily modified ST150 will still likely be low the stock output of the fabia unless they have moved to a different engine or forced induction.

Heatsoak is definitely noticable. I could really feel it on the last 1/8 mile at bruntigthorp 1/4 mile and also suffered alot on track.

The improvment with an uprated intercooler though is not just lower temperatures, but massively improved recovery. The IATs will go up on WOT, theres nothing you can do about it, however how long an IC takes to shed that heat is what actually matters.

Intercooler is definitely a good mod to have on these cars.

Not sure id want a C02 spray cooler for the IC. Id bet the intake would start drawing some of that CO2 your spraying right in front of the car and inlet through the filter and into the engine, potentially causing a loss of power

Spot on.

I had one with a GGR CAIS and coilovers, it was fun indeed. Don't try and tackle these in the bends though, they handle VERY well

Got rid of mine after 18 months because when revving it hard (and you always did with no turbo) the 2 litre NA engine did about 20mpg.

How much is the inter-cooler upgrade?

I was in 5th gear so it would probs been a bit of heatsoak then.

But then again iv had no problems dealing with feesty STs before so who knows

Also iv just had the eml light flashing at me when i was out about 20min ago but that was when booting it from a low speed after sitting on the motorway for a bit

That^^^

Bit off topic but Im a massive fast ford nut.

My past fleet has included XR2i, XR3i, Mk1 ST24, Mk2 ST24, M2 ST200, Mk3 ST TDCI, Mk2 Focus ST amongst many other lower grade fords. Love the brand, if they bring out another Mondeo ST, i will probably buy one again. best cars ive ever owned. The ST200 OMG!! That was a chassis

Depends on the brand. Currently im only aware of two options. It might actually only be one, it depends if forge have finished it yet.

Forge Intercooler only: Id expect to pay around £700 incl VAT, possibly more as they have been doing alot of R&D trying to get it right, its been months in the making. Not sure on sizes just yet.

Pace Products Intercooler&radiator package. This kit comes in at about £1100 incl VAT but you get an intercooler that is 35% larger and a radiator that is 75% larger. So its alot of cash but your getting more than just an IC.

Ford ST/RS department is really good, just not a Ford fan :(

If Skoda approached the sporty part of the brand with a bit more oomph we would have an awesome handling car, however, the brand is somewhat conservatove with looks and handling so middle ground is what we get :)

only time I have experianced heat soak is with the mark I vRS on hot summer days, with its hidden caked up side mounted intercooler, used to really suffer when the temps went up...

no problem with the remapped fiat (FMIC standard)

no problem with the mark II , even on really hot dayus last year when contstantly runnning 5-7k hairing up hartside pass ect... no problems at all!

BUT mine is standard ;)

I haven't suffered any problems really. If it's warm when I go down to Castle Combe then maybe I'll see problems then. Hottest I've seen was our last hot spell and it was fine then. Again mine is standard

i think most of my original heat issues were a result of my high boost map i had before changing tuner. I do wander if a nortmal intercooler would have sufficed instead of the intercooler and radiator.

At least i have the worst case scenario covered now though
