What's the next compulsory or standard luxury?

Featured Replies

Over the years things have come in as luxuries and then gone on to become standard, or even compulsory. I'm thinking about radial tyres, laminated windscreens, high level brake lights, ABS, air bags, etc. Is it even possible to buy a Skoda without aircon?

So.....what's the next big thing?

Suggestions for starters:

1. Turbo engines - for low emissions.

2. DSG boxes - ditto.

SR

3. Greenline/Bluemotion type accessories on all cars, so start/top and regenerative breaking etc

4. Heads up display, only on top models now but I think that it'll spread quickly

5. Automation, so auto wipers and lights will go everywhere

6. Internet connection to the car via tethering with your phone or direct subscription.

Stop Start possible, cylinder deactivation, that sensor the Citigo has to brake for you when it senses a collision, ESP, ABS already is

Pratnav! You know, the device that people try to blame when they've just driven onto a railway line, into a body of water...

I saw that. Anyone who relies on a satnav that badly needs their licences taken off them

ESP is becomming compulsary, cars will no longer get NCAP 5 without it... happening a bit like ABS did....

not sure when, think its this year...

Just tend to look at what the 'premium teir' models are being fitted with, then add 5 years for the mid-range and a bit longer for smaller vehicles.

So current 7-Series, A8, S-Class etc. They were all the ones to get the technology first, ABS, air bags, cruise control etc etc.

So coming up, things like full LED lighting (inc headlights), nightvision, head-up display, adaptive/radar cruise, full internet integration etc.

Looking forward to night vision and huds.

Special forces stylee :bandit:

HUDs for satnav and car controls.

Touchscreen controls for ICE kit or even climate. Nice smooth dash's uncluttered by buttons and knobs.

But probably covered in greasy fingerprints, bogeys and bits of KFC.

Radar cruise control and collision avoidance I can see being popular.

Yep, would definitely like radar cruise.

Have tried it a few times and it's very disconcerting the first couple of times, especially when it slows the car down with no intervention. The sensatation when traffic clears and the car accelerates back upto the set speed without prompting takes a bit of getting used to as well :D

Having just got bought a 2009 octavia with base "s" spec, I consider rear electiric windows a luxury (it doesn't have them).

What I'd like to see as standard :

  • Cruise control
  • climate control
  • curtain airbags
  • multi-function steering wheel
  • paddle gear shifting (DSG?)

If it's perceived safety, it'll probably become a standard.

DSG can suck my plums, manual only for me.

Night vision would be awesome!

The things i think SHOULDT become standard are things like DSG, some of us like to manually change gear, regardless of a DSG been quicker blah blah. No to stop/start rubbish either, I dont understand why everyone thinks its so great, at something like a level crossing yes ok, but stop, start traffic it will end up burning more fuel and have unnecessary wear on some parts

Multi function steering wheel would be cool, and this whole keyless entry and start is pretty cool..being a woman i always manage to use my car keys in my hand bag somewhere

I have a multi function steering wheel on my '03!

And I'm afraid I'm going to have to pick you up on that last part. You have clearly said many times you're not a girly girl. You must now go out and buy a wallet!

I agree with Multi function steering wheel, it's the only thing my vRs hasn't got. Even the new Hyundai i30 has it. And Ema, I'm not a girly girl either, proper Tom boy me. lol

Yeah the whole multi function steering wheel is abit of a joke, even my V reg clio had steering wheel controls for the radio

Such a class act!

Yeah... I think it's VAG's way of keeping the brother man down... Arses.

You need a Octavia vRS 57 onwards and you'll have all of that...with the exception fo the curtain bags unless they've been spec'd.
