Featured Replies

Does anyone know what kelvin temperature bulbs are fitted as standard to the xenon system?

1 of my bulbs has gone so i am going to change both but i want to keep to the existing bulb colour/temperature.

Its 4300K, just found after doing some searching

I can't be 100% certain, but I think it's 5000K. It's not the whitest and certainly not blue. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will answer your question definitively. Good luck!

Ah, I was wrong, sorry!

Defo 4300K.

How much are they out of interest?

I have the xenon upgrade and I'm I right in believing that the main beam is a normal h1 halogen lamp?

Yes, the Octavia has xenon's not bi-xenon's so the main beam function is a standard halogen H1.

Depends what brand really, philips & osram bulbs are around £60-£80 per bulb!!

Ebay are doing cheaper brands for £30 a pair, but i suppose its the old saying you get what you pay for.

Saying that, i had the ebay bulbs for 4 years in my old car & they never gave me a problem so will probably take a punt on the cheaper 1s.

So what are bi xenons and why does it say this a many used car websites in the spec section.

So if I understand the dipped beam is the only ones with Xenons, high beam is the H1 fitment which comes on alongside the dipped.

Isnt there a flasher bulb other than the H1 main beam bulb?

Also has anyone else heard that Xenon bulbs should be replaced every 1.5 years, or is this just marketing fluff

Bi-xenons have a shutter over part of the lens. When you switch to main beam the shutter lifts revealing the full beam pattern*.

On the Octavia the xenon bulbs are for the dipped function only. The main beam and flash function are both performed by the standard halogen H1 bulb.

The Skoda Superb is quite unique though, it has bi-xenon headlights but also has a H1 bulb for the flash function. This same H1 bulb also comes on when main beam is selected so you get both the H1 and bi-xenon light output for main beam.

*Some bi-xenon headlights work differently but this is the most common set-up.

Hey thanks for the answer, so with an octy vrs do the dipped beam xenons stay on when the main beam is selected, also does dipped and main come on when you flash or just main?

Yes, dipped xenon's stay on with main beam.

Just main beam (no xenon dipped) for the flash function.

On the latest xenon headlights on the facelift Octavia I believe the beam adjusts left and right when you go round corners too.

The Superb's bi-xenon's adjust the length of the beam depending on your speed and the weather conditions too!

Yes the beam moves left and right. Looking now at changing the OEM h1 lamps to the following set

I wouldnt bother getting anything that has 'cool blue' hyper blue' or anything 'blue' in the name, they reason they are blue is with the addition of a coating on the bulb which reduces the total light output albeit making it look brighter because of the 'tint'

Go for something like Osram nightbreakers plus or Philips xtreme vision, absolutely no need for a cool looking bulb when the only time you will see it is when you either forget you have left your lights on, during the fitment/checking or while your are blinding oncoming drivers and forget to turn off main beam.

More to do with the colour rendition. It's more or less the same colour rendition of the xenons 4300k. Not happy with the orange output of the halogen

If your interested in good colour rendering have a look at this, read the last paragraph.

I think you have your logic a little mixed up regarding colour temperature and colour rendition but either way I know what you mean, you want a nice 4300K bulb with a high cri
