Weight saving!

Featured Replies

Ok guys what can be removed from the vrs to save weight but still retain its daily driving ability (ie keeping seats door panels etc) any brackets plastic guards that can be remove or trimmed to make the car lighter? The spare wheel etc has already gone.

why would you on a road trim car pointless imo

unless its for track then i would leave it alone !!!

Because it makes it handle better, better acceleration better mpg etc.

As said though its pretty pointless for day-to-day driving, to lose enough weight to make a noticeable difference you'd have to either get rid of creature comforts like climate control and stereo system or spend a fortune on lightweight parts like brakes and carbon fibre bits.

I've taken out the spare wheel, tools and rear seats before for track days and all it's done is make the rear end a little bit more twitchy.

Because it makes it handle better, better acceleration better mpg etc.

To keep it in road trim you will nót únorové any of the above as it will be minimal!!!

I také it you have upgraded brakes suspension and have a good driving style ??? As these will improve the above ;-)

Where the mk1 is concerned smoothness is the key. Set the car up for the bend and don't change the steering angle once in the bend if you can.

I have a Jekyll and Hyde driving style so I've been told lol! Well it seems you have answered the question really with out it being totally stripped I won't gain much.

leave it alone !!!

all this talk of weight saving reminds me, do you still have the contact details of that German outfit that made GPR bonnets and tailgates ?

... remove or trimmed to make the car lighter?

leave SWMBO, kids, passengers, pets, etc at home, go on a diet ;)

(advice I should take myself)

Already do mate the car is for me no one else and as for the diet! Down from 17 to 13 stone however the last couple of stone I want to lose is taking a long time to shift!!

if you want to keep the weight down, don't fill the car up with petrol each time. Petrol is surprisingly heavy, and a full 55 litres weights something like a 9 stone person.

Remove spare wheel and tools is about it really.

That easy I never put more than £20 in a time unless I'm going on a long journey.

... 17 to 13 stone ...

you're doing better than me :notme:

yes still got the details buddy but they never replied to my many emails lol

i can prob get them done cheaper if we get them together

i will prob go for bonnet wings and front doors ;-) leave the rest to keep some weight over the rear end

CD changer. that thing and the bracket is quite heavy. good KG at least.

Yeah removing the spare wheel and tools etc. and rear seats (bases and backs) is the simplest way to save a bit of weight.

Removing all the mudflaps will slightly reduce drag too, and having all the correct engine undertrays will help the under car airflow.

Anything else and you're getting a bit extreme/desperate for a road car!

The rear seat backs weigh loads btw. But they do protect the back of your skull from all the junk in your boot in an emergency brake situation!

Like Gee-man said, the CD changer and bracket is pretty beefy too. Mine now lives in the cupboard.

I've removed all the rear seats and completely stripped the rear to metal so far(yes the rear seats do weigh alot). Planning on removing all aircon and related parts soon as its not needed in the UK! Also removed spare wheel. I find removing all the weight can help fuel consumption too when your just in the mood to dawdle around. If you are just driving the car then remove passenger seat too. You could even go as far as removing dash(these weigh a bomb) and installing an electronic gauge setup.
