Loose gearstick

Hi folks,

I very rarely use the forum but I have a question about my Fabia and hope someone might be able to give me some more info.

This morning I stepped into the car and noticed I had left it in gear last night so I moved the gearstick to neutral. As I dont that I heard a snapping sound and the gear stick suddenly became far looser than it was i.e. there's a lot more play in it when it's sitting either in neutral or in gear.

Car seems to move through the gears as before though and I don't sense any issue with the clutch. As I'm no mechanic I've got no idea what might have happened. Anyone experienced this?
