How to remove rear suspension struts?

Featured Replies

I need to know this evening how the rear suspension struts come out the Fabia? They appear to just disappear into the depths of the wheel arch - easy enough to undo at the bottom but the top???

Also, anyone running with coilovers... Normally the suspension is made up of separate damper and spring (spring lodged in somewhere else...) So how coilovers work being "adjustable"? Does the spring still go in the same slot, and the damper do the controlling of height? I always thought the spring dictated height, not the damper, so was just wondering?

Should be a bolt or 2 in the boot J...probably hiding under the carpet.

With coilover on Octy...which has the same basic suspension layout at rear....the spring and damper units are one as at front.

Basically when adjsting the height you a moving the platform which holds the spring so it either is compress or lenght depending on height is reduced or upped....I think that generally the case.

I thought so too, but on inspection can't see anything behind the carpet - only the arch itself... Maybe I'm missing something, but the new setup is being fitted tomorrow / Sunday so would love to know for sure to prevent muchos head scratching :D

Jase - Is there one day in a week when you don't pull your car apart??

Just looking at a CD that I know you have ;) , there is a nice picture on there that may help.

Looks like only two bolts that hold the cup on and one that holds the strut in.

I would guess that you'd only need to pop off the top rubber cap and undo the top locking nut. Only problem being, it might spin.

What CD? ;)

The struts undo with two 16mm bolts up the top of the damper inside the wheel arch not the car. Then the top mounting comes down with the damper, this then has to be removed and swapped over to the new set up. Do one side at a time and the rear axle wil stay put.

Well done Jason - at least you got some responses! I'd worked out that the only access to the damper tops is by removing the wheel arch liners. When fitting coilovers I belive you dispense with the dampers altogether then remove the road spring and fit the combined spring/damper coilover where the spring formerly was - using an adaptor (presumably supplied with the coilover) to locate it in the former spring mountings. Good luck!

No rear damper where the OEM normally is? Bloomin' eck! :D

Thats what I thought when I saw that. Good luck!

When fitting coil overs to the rear they arent usually technically a coil over.

What you have is an adjustable damper (if applicable) much like any other damper and a shorter road spring with an adjustable platform under it so you can set the height.

Thank you Dr Zed for giving me a giggle tonight!!:thumbup:

Jase......... leave the bloody thing alone!!!

You'll end up with a gypo's caravan not a car!!

My late father always said that my cars looked like 1000 gadgets simply flying in close formation :rofl::rofl:

then again, he did drive a Morris Marina and swore by (?) it :D:D:D

Hope you clean your fingernails young man

Can you tell I've

a) Got no idea how coilovers work, and

B) not actually opened the box with the new coilovers in to "have a play" ??
