egr problem need help !

hi there i have a excessive egr reading on my vag system, ive had a look at the valve it looks like new, the only thing i couldnt find was the other half of the vacume pipe !!!

the pipe goes from the valve under the coil pack on my 1.4 16v engine to 1/2 of a round breather box the other half is missing and i cant find it, could anyone give me a pointer on where it may be located

car had done 120k and never missed a beat, just need to locate the missing part to make the valve actuate when its supposed to

i assume the other half is some where on the throttle body? but im buggerd if i can find it

car had a service a few weeks ago by a local dealer

any help would be good

i think the code was 1676 or something like that ive reset the code will have to wait till it comes back on again to check

I think that you are refering to the small "free air" pipe that is on these EGR, it is only there to allow fresh air into the EGR pipe at "certain times or conditions" - it does look a bit nasty, but all it is is a filter, I can't help thinking that VAG could have plumbed it back to the inlet side of the filter - but that is how it is.

Are you sure its excessive flow you are getting and not "too low" flow due probably to a coked up port below the throttle body? (I did not check the code you listed).

Okay, I've checked codes:- 16785 = insufficient flow 16786 = excessive flow Of course the valve might have failed and be stuck but not in the closed position.

its 16786 code excessive flow, ive romoved the valve and all looks fine, nice and clean

i reset the code using my vag tool, then after 20 miles or so it comes back on

ive cleaned it all out but it seems fine little or no build up of carbon

is there anything else that could cause it?

Seeing as you have VAG COM or VCDS, why don't you try doing an adaption of this valve, but first record the end voltages, then perform adaption and see what the new end voltages are. It will either pass adaption but end up with new end values or it will fail adaption.

ive tryed that it will only allow and adjustment of upto +/- 1.5 volt on the system im using

but the light still keeps comming on but it may take it a little longer say 25 miles

i may have to go down the old seafoam route or is there something else i can use thats similar

as im thinking it may be a blockage somewhere i cant get to

Remove the throttle body and check that end of the pipe for any blockages. If the pipe is blocked/restricted the ECU will wind the EGR fully open and not get the change in mixture it was expecting and then throw the EGR excessive flow code.

Whilst you're there, give the throttle body a clean, then when fully assembled give the EGR valve a bit of exercise through the output tests, adapt it and the throttle body.

stripped the whole lot back its all as clean as you like, no biuld up anywhere !!!!!

took the pipe off the throttle body and the egr valve clean no build up, but just incase i left it in some solvent for a hour while i broke everything else appart

the throttle body only had a small ammount of carbon, just on the venturi (butterfly valve), but that was all,

removed the valve again !!!, the little piston thing was clean and seemed to move freely, again no carbon anywhere to be seen

well nothing you wouldnt expect, re-built the whole lot again for the 3rd time this week

reset code 10 miles later eml back on, same old code

so im thinking the fix for this may be to remove the dashboard, and pull out the little bulb on the back of the board, and put the dash back in?

ive got some seafoam comming from a friend im gong to give it a try

we service it every 8k

allways replace plugs filters + all the usual bits and bobs

OK totaly stripped everything

removed valve

removed pipe to throttle body

removed throttle body

cleaned all down with carb cleaner

done egr adaption via vag-com on laptop

now have a new code of 17811 EGR Flow Deviation

any ideas on this one
