Bushes gone

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just got my car back from the garage and they told me that 1 bottom suspension bushes have gone, and the others are on the way. They told me that they did not want to work on it as the bushes are sat in an aluminium case or something? and to get bushes out they usually soldier/weld them out, but in this case they would have to try and cut them out. But having it been aluminium it could damage pretty easy, meaning a £200-300 replacement.

Can anybody tell me if there is an easy way to replace these bushes and if It could be done without specialist equipment?

Thanks in advance.

They haven't got a clue, it's only £170ish at a main dealer, parts are circa £20 or £45ish if you prefer an easy life with a 2 part Powerfelx bush, have a look in the guides section for a step by step guide with pictures.

Search console bushes. Loads of information. Thanks to a member on here lending me a tool I was able to do the work myself. The bushes cost about £15. Or you can buy the complete console including bush for £70 each.

Front rear console bushes by the sound of it, with them being in aluminium. They're talking cack basically.... I paid £40 for parts and £70 labour and that was from the top VAG specialist in the area. You can source the parts yourself for around £50.00.

Great stuff, thanks for the advice guys. Just glad i didn't have to pay them for them to tell me that :D

You need no special tools if you fit Powerflex bushes though they are twice the price of the standard bush they do come with a lifetime warranty.

is there just 1 console per left and right front suspension side and is there just 1 bush in each of these consoles? as I may aswell change the lot, save having to do them at intervals.

I was always taught that with suspension what you do to one side you do to the other. You have one front and one rear console bush per side, the fronts rarely seem to fail, the rears regularly do. Skoda introduced an uprated rear bush some time ago and Seat Cupra bushes were of a solid design similar to other after market bushes, they require either a special tool £70ish to push them in/out or the construction of one as per the link I posted above. As the tool and cupra bushes don't cost much less than a set of Powerfelx bushes that come with a warranty that's longer than i'll own the car and they make fitting a 30 second job I went with them. The downside is they're supposed to be a little harsher to drive with so fractionally more vibration but people say the same about the cupra versions.

Yeah seems right, I found mine very cheaply (amazon).... Go on www.awesomegti.com and get the seat Cupra bushes aswell for the rear bushes :)

Are the rear bushes in aluminium consoles too?

Yep but they're won't deteriorate at the rate the standard ones will/have

Have a look at the link I posted, specifically the pictures of the bushes in relation to the wishbone and the car, it's a lot easier if you can visualise it.
