Grinding Noise, VRS Interior Fan Thread number 2!

Recommended Posts

Hi so this noise has also started to bug me more and more, im sure its getting louder.

Along with my problem of the knocking from the engine and the scored camshafts im at my wits end with this car, however im keeping it and its getting put right at no cost to me as it has a 12 month extended Skoda warranty

You can hear a sort of a grinding rythmic noise, it only does it when in gear and driving with the fan on, doesnt matter if air con is running.

It does speed up to a certain extent when engine speed rises but only a little.

Oh I have checked the pollen filter and its pretty clean, certainly no leaves or debris caught inside.

If you have a listen in the video you can hear it just over the road noise

Are you sure it only appears when the fan is on?

I found this thread which sounds quite similar to your problem, the OP seemed to think it was gearbox related?

Hmm, to me that would more likely rule out the fan rather than something else.

Being on the move wouldn't ordinarily change the way the fan works so if the noise was fan related I'd expect it to be present when stationary and moving.

Whereas if it was related to the other mechanical problems you've experienced recently then there is more of a chance these could become noticeable on the move?

Have you tried setting the fan on full speed and altering the direction of the airflow. If there is something stuck or catching then this may help to free it or at least move it out of the way of whatever it is catching on...

I have tried putting the fan on max and not specifically going through all the different air direction settings.

Is there maybe some vent that opens when the car starts moving forward while the fan is running?

But to confirm it only happens when the fan is running and im driving, turn fan off while driving and noise stops, or stop driving and noise stops, however another noise takes over, sounds like a water pump bearing whizzing away, goes up and down with engine revs, just to add another problem into the mix but I think they are related.

Thanks for the link, anyone know if he is available or a daily visiting member? I did have a chap down by Edinburgh change a few things through vcds after I bought the car but must admit didnt notice the ticking noise then.

Best just to PM him and a guy in Aberdeen too might be lucky and find someone who travels about a bit and can meet up with some time. Worst worst case dealers will read codes or spend £20 on ebay for a basic code reader that you can get codes off and check them out on here, might be handy to have.

my car seems to be making a similar noise but not as bad as yours, mine goes away when i press the econ button which makes me think its something to do with the aircon. the aircon still blows cold so im just living with it now, my compressor isnt noisy ive been under the car when this is switched on(presume it was compressor under the alternator). i replaced my fan with a new one not so long ago so i know thats ok

ill follow this thread with interest in case you find the problem.

  • 4 weeks later...

had a similar noise problem, thought is was one of the fans on the heating system as the noise was coming from the glove box area. Had the car in the garage for a service last week and said that there was a fan noise or something grinding around the glove box area. Took the mechanic for a drive so he could hear it and........."By noise transver"?? the diagnostics were.. Its the coolant pump at the front of the engine thats running dry, apprently its a pump tha runs on a small belt similar to a hover belt as he discribed it, Under warrenty its getting replaced new pump, belt, coolant etc. He also said that the front end of the car will have to come off to get to the pump??? thats a new one on me. Dont assume rattles, noises etc are located in the area where you think the noise is coming from.

just an update for me , i had my car at the garage a few weeks ago and they reckoned my car was low on gas and the noise was the compressor struggling to suck through enough coolant, i need a re-gas first to make sure that is the problem, i havent had it done yet though i have other priorities that come first.

I wouldn't leave it too long, the compressor is a known weak point on the Octavia so if you are putting yours under extra stress then it might result in a premature failure.

I'd be tempted to run it in 'econ' mode until you can get it regassed...

Hi all !i was the "other poster" that posted about a similar noise ! It sounds very similar to what you have recorded on video I've now narrowed it down a bit it is now not just after a long run it can be at any time and is more noticeable when i stop and I am sat with the engine idling and warm it is a prominent swooshing grinding type noise that is audible inside the car but cannot be heard outside the cabin? and is definitely not engine speed related , but it is stopped if I put the air con / fan on for a few seconds then when it's turned off the noise will probably be gone. My obvious question has to be what runs ata steady speed slower than the engine and is dependant on the air con being on ? Could it be the compressor swirling the refrigerant round the system perhaps?

hi its been running in econ for about 5 months now, i really must get round to this!

Could it be the compressor swirling the refrigerant round the system perhaps?

my local vag specialist thinks this is what is causing the noise, the compressor is trying to suck refrigerant from the low pressure side and because it is low it is struggling and making the noise, by the way your description of the noise is exactly as mine is.

come payday ill have her in for a regas

Hi . Newbie to the forum. Our 56 reg  Octavia'VRS seems to have this issue. Regular grinding noise only audible when car heater fan on.  Does seem to be getting worse. Is this needing urgent attention or can we drive with the heater and air con off until we find a good time to get a repair?

Also  meant to say the frequency of the noise increases with speed. Initially it sounded like something  like a brake disc catching, bit I realised it stopped when I turned off the heating fan.

Thanks for any suggestions🙂
