Faint, high pitched noise around 50-70mph

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

The car underneath my name is the car in question. Around 50mph (just under 2000rpm in 4th) I am hearing a faint whistling noise that sounds like it's coming from the front of the car. It's still audible up to 70mph, but isn't as noticeable.

I haven't noticed any reduction in power, and haven't been getting great mpg, but that could be my driving. Otherwise, the car appears to be normal (well, to me, as this is my first diesel).

I'm also having a problem, that sounds like it's coming from the front left wheel. When going over bumps/uneven road, it sounds as though there is a 'tinny' rattling, sort of similar to the sound of shopping trolleys banging together (strange comparison I know!)

Anyone got any ideas what these could be?

Turbo pipes all in place?

Wheel/s out of balance?

Hi guys.

With regards to turbo pipes, I wouldn't have a clue as to what I'm looking for. I'm not really that great a car person, any suggestions? Or should I just take it to the dealer (I'm still in warranty)

The wheel don't feel out of balance, as there is no vibrating/juddering etc. I do believe they may be slightly mis-aligned as I think a straight steering wheel has me turning slightly left.

I have a leaky air box that makes a similar noise

wheel bearing? - used to be a problem on Octys, maybe other VAG cars are the same?

Hey guys,

Sorry for not picking this one back up sooner.

Regarding the whistling noise. I took it into the dealer, and they said they could find nothing wrong, and could only hear normal engine noises. I'm going to take it back and get them to come out with me to hear the noise.

Would a leaky air box not affect all speeds?

Regarding the wheels noise, when it went into SEAT they found a loose bolt in that area and tightened it up. That helped the noise I was hearing, but when I had the wheels off and got tyres changed and aligned, the noise has gone away.

I take it you've tried putting some insulating tape over the two rear window quarter dividers and seeing if this fixes it?

As for the air box, it would affect the engine at certain revs if it was that, rather than certain speeds as the leak would be down to the air rushing in.
