Beginner Questions

Hi,

I've got a few (probably obvious) questions that I'd like to ask so I'm sorry in advance! :o

1) I'm getting a new head unit for my Furby vRS, looking at the symphony HU it looks wider than a standard HU or is it just me? Will it just slide out and the new one fit ok? Will I need some sort of keys to take the OEM HU out?

2) I have read that I need a new connector (ISO connector? ) to fit the head unit, is this correct? Does anyone have a link to the correct one or know where I can buy them?

3) Next, I am also getting a sub for the boot and as a result an amp. Do I just run the wires under the carpet? How will I get them to the back of the head unit to plug them in?

I've never done anything like this before so I don't want it to all go up in smoke! :P

Thankyou for your input

Yes. I used junior hacksaw blades with the teeth filed down, a notch in one end and tape over the other end to protect my fingers. See below. I found the Symphony a bit of a tight fit. I had to lever out the two trim strips at the side so I could get a grip on it.

When putting in the replacement HU, a metal cage was required. This was an extremely tight fit and only went in if the top and bottom were squeezed together (thus slightly reducing the width).

A quick SEARCH wil answer all your questions but here we go anyway.

1. A Symphony headunit it bigger than an aftermarket unit, there is an adapter available from you Skoda dealer, its just a piece of trim that blanks out the gap left at the top. Yes you need keys, dealer can supply them as can Halfords etc, they are the same as Kenwood ones.

2. Most aftermarket headunits will have ISO connectors on them, this is also what the Fabia has, no aditional looms are required, you may however need to change over the permanent and ignition lives though. Also it is recomended that you get an aerail booster, these are available from Halfords etc and just need a 12v feed.

3.There is a very good guide on here showing how to run you power feed for the cable, just takes a search.

How will I know whether I have to do this? And what happens if I don't?

You will know as the headunit will not keep radio stations in its memory and probably not turn off fully.

By the way, make sure you eject any CD in the Symphony while the power is still connected :)

 Good Thinking!!!!

So is the head unit just basically plug in and play? Shouldn't be any complications? I don't want to mess anything up!

It was for me, with a Pioneer DEH-P77MP. I had done it before, so it took me maybe 20 minutes this time. As you may have guessed, in the hurry a CD was left in it!

I needed the aerial adapter (the Pioneer takes a large plug; the Skoda provides a small plug) and I needed to swap the red and yellow cables on the Pioneer side of the in-line power connector socket.

You may find you need to poke the in-line connectors carefully through the hole at the back of the recess as you push the new unit in. I used a metal ruler that could slide in above the unit for a while as I pushed in it. Watch out for sharp edges on the ruler and make sure no bare connectors there.
