What Bluetooth - Confused!

Featured Replies

OK I'm slightly lost with the amount of codes and different types of kit available.

My Car consists of being a VRS 06 plate with maxidot but no MFSW, it has a 2010 Columbus 3TO unit (7 Digit LED etc.), and functions and shows in the maxidot.

I have not upgraded my CAN Gateway as the Columbus runs firmware (2720) to get around the battery drain issue on earlier cars.

What are my options regarding Bluetooth Standard OEM modules, ie do the later ones work with my Maxidot, text and A2DP streaming? or do I have to purchase a 1Z unit, if so do they stream music as well as the other options ie. voice control, text messages etc.?

Or is a Fiscon device just the better option, but nearly double the money and does it do voice control?.

And has Dension ironed out the problems with Gateway Five, because on paper this look a fantastic bit of kit for less than £200

errr confused!

So looking a bit more into it, I've found quite a few modules on ebay and wiring harness from carsystems pl, but which ones do I need ie. which harness fits which module and which module does what and works with my Columbus/maxidot

I've found this module

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SEAT-SKODA-BLUETOOTH-BOX-MODULE-INTERFACE-MFD3-RNS510-RCD510-5K0035730D-/251036021585?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a72e9b351

With a harness like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Bluetooth-Installation-KIT-P-P-5N0035730-3C8035730A-/180710984863?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item2a1336cc9f

But are they compatible?

or just buy the whole system together:

Jesus I'm confusing myself now with all these codes!!!!

Right thought I'd update this incase anyone else needed the info.

The parts I purchased were the bluetooth control unit:

5K0035730D (£75-£100 on ebay)

And the wiring harness from Carsystems:

5N0035730 A/B/C/D & 3C8035730 A/B (now found a 5KO harness from car systems for £50)

Now the harness states 5NO035730D but it also is a direct fit for the 5KO035730, and the best bit about the car systems stuff is that it comes pre-wired ready for voice control, no fitting or chopping of extra wires.

For people who don't know the difference the 5KO unit and 5NO are different in the way that act as a bluetooth module. The 5NO ones are rSAP ready, ie. for phones like Nokias and some Samsungs (galaxy s2) and the unit can read text messages and you can type text messages from the columbus head unit. The rSAP (5NO) ones actually use the bluetooth unit as the phone rather than your mobile which is why the carsystems harness came with a GSM antenna, this wasn't needed in my installation as I had the 5KO module.

I have a HTC desire which doesn't as standard have rSAP so it was a simple choice of Bluetooth module for me. Either a 1Z (earlier module) that can talk to my Maxidot but not do Bluetooth music streaming A2DP or the 5KO unit that supports A2DP streaming but doesn't communicate with my 06 plate maxidot (will communicate with FL maxidots though). I went with the later 5KO as I can see all the features of the phone I need on the Columbus and I can use the voice control to call people etc very easily.

Fitting was a quite easy and can be done within a couple of hrs max, then a simple change of code via VCDS to enable the phone and voice control. I pushed my extra cabling for the head unit above and to the glovebox side of the stereo's plastic cage in the dashboard, this gives plenty of extra room to get the Columbus in easy.

The bluetooth unit slips in underneath this cage, easy if you remove the climate control panel first then snap the tabs off the Bluetooth unit and velcro the unit to the underside of the cage.

What I'm left with now is a system that works perfect with my HTC Desire, downloads address book instantly to the unit with the ability to stream music from the phone too. A fully working voice control system which is really really good for navigation destinations and all for the total of £150

Now some companies are charging nearly £300 or £400 fitted for these units!, buy the parts individual and save a packet

sorry for late comment. Yes 5K0 is the one, which works even without coding.
