car valuations bs?

Featured Replies

So I want to swap my TDI for a VRS and I checked what my car was worth online. According to Parkers i should get 2100 in part exchange and I think around 1900 cash. When i enquired via an online service that I forget the name of I had a few dealers offering around £1100-1200 despite the fact the car has a new cambelt and brand new tyres with 100k on the clock.

I realise I wont get the £2600 back I paid for it but are they simply trying to take me for a ride? Its my first car so I've no experience selling cars although im aware there is a big price difference between buying and selling price wise (im not stupid!)

When I bought the car the price/condition was the best I could find in the area. Little bit frustrated by it :(

Dealers have to factor in a profit, and a warranty, but still that's a low bid!

sounds about right you never get near parkers prices need too sell private. i am afraid all dealers look to make at least £1000 profit on a car like yours.

Seems weird, my mate bought his car for around £1000 and has been offered £400 for it and it has no mot/tax now. Mine has both of these + the other stuff I mentioned. Shame really, I'll have to wait until I can sell it privately when I can do without it for a month or so.

I got my VRS by looking around and sending the odd message to people who had them for sale on ebay and asking them if they wanted to do a deal with the car I had then which was a Mondeo Zetec S TDCI. A chap close to me was looking for a diesel so ended up doing the deal, never been so happy

I was actually looking at the mk1 in the classifieds that is now £2099. Looks a lovely car and I'm shocked he can't sell it. I if i had a way of selling my car (and my insurers didnt sting me to bad for it) I would bite his hand off for it.

I take it you're part ex-ing it at a dealership for a Mk2 VRS?

If you're after a Mk1 VRS you should get enough from a private sale of a 100k diesel Octy to buy a decent example of a Mk1 VRS from a private seller.

Nope mk1 mate. I have been thinking of keeping the car for a 12-18 months than a mk2 might be more in my price range. Really I've just been looking at my options for changing the car. whether that be private sale, part ex or cash from a dealer. None of them are ideal at the moment so I think I am going to have to just wait.

I'd probably keep hold of it if it were me... the mk1 diesels hold their value better than the VRS's.

If it had been a year ago I would have happily done you a straight swap for my VRS!

parkers is a waste of time and NOT what the industry use as a bench mark.

Industry uses Glasses guide, which is usually about 500 cheaper than parkers. so take 500 off, that makes 1600, then they will take into account they will service it, etc if needed, place a warranty on it an want to make a bit of money so take another 400-500 off. unfortunately trading is a bad way to get a car. IMO, hold onto it for a few months, or put it up for sale privately. can advertise for free anyway! sign up in back of car. Most Private dealers look to put 750 on top of price to make money an allow for trade in against it. when i worked at a main ford dealer they used to put 1500 on top. Its better to go to a dealer with cash as you can then barter with them by saying well I dont have a trade in so how about knocking 500-600 off price straight away. usually a good starting point, or go 400 off and free warranty, not 3 months but 12 months.

I know i will get shot by the dirty diesel drivers( :giggle: ) but with the cost of diesel going up soo much and the fact that this country has never produced enough diesel as we has always been predominantly petrol car drivers.... hence why when **** hit the fan with the threat of fuel strike diesel prices went through the roof and no one had any.

If it a main stream dealer your car will go straight to auction and they probs wont make much off it tbh

Would make a good taxi though ;)

when i worked at main dealer they used to have a bunch of car dealers they would call and basically they would see who wanted it and what they would pay. such a joke as then they would tell u less an make a bit more.

Yeah, maybe i can find a taxi driver who wants it lol. although a local firm just bought 200 octavias in blue apparently so Its unlikely.

Thanks Dave and Lolli. I'll use Glasses in the future. I have seen a dealer using a parkers booklet before though! Just the one though ;)

Someone at work had their bora scrapped this week. So he bought a slightly newer one with around 60k miles on the clock for something like 4k. Unfortunately he had the day off otherwise he might have bought my car. Crazy stuff.

I am unfortunately in similar situation have second car i cant shift. 2.5 v6. thinking about scrapping it. dont want to as its a perfectly good motor.

sorry i spelt it wrong. Glass's guide.

any more questions feel free to ask or PM. Have been in sales for years. very rarely do i pay the price someone is advertising a car at, or even simple techniques to use when dealing with them.

Cheers,

Dave

I don't know what car your talking about part-exing (I'm on my phone) I bought my mk1 octavia tdi110 elegance 2003 last August for £2600 and traded it in last week I got £1700 that's with partial service history and 93k. Parkers said 2.2k odd. Parkers are never accurate, I would pay for a glasses guide price if I were you as that's what the industry uses.

Do you mind me asking what the value of the car you traded it in for was? I imagine if it was worth 5k plus you would get better trade in value. I might be wrong though.

It was £6.5k but to be honest that shouldn't matter, if your car is worth say £2k then it's worth £2k?
