What work is carried out on a 40,000 mile service or 4years for a 1.4 tdi?

Yes as Ad Lav says...it's the big one. Cambelt is now every 40k I think, or 4 years. It's a highly stressed component on PD engines so don't ignore it. Make sure they change the tensioner and waterpump too. Those are the items that most often cause cambelt failure, not belt wear as many think. They are cheap to replace. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I will be interested if the stealers mention the Cambelt, if you don't.

Mine went in for it's 40000 @ 4yrs and they didn't bother.

My wife took the car for the service yesterday, I am now paying monthly for a service and MOT, but looking through my service book the air and pollen filter have never been changed and there was no mention of changing the cambelt. The only thing they seemed interested in was putting an additive into the fuel to clean the injectors and increase fuel economy.

It use to be the main Skoda dealer in Macclesfield but it is now under Bristol Street Motors Vauxhall.

That probably why then. It may pay you to revist them and have a chat. They may not have the latest info if they are now Vauxhall.

My owners manual says 150 000km for the cambelt for the 1.4TDI, which is about 90 000 miles I think. Doesn't mention anything about years. Mine is 2008 and just had a service done, no mention about the cambelt. This is in Finland. It kind of worries me because how can owners manual say other thing here and other in yours. Mine has done about 27000miles now (42000km) but the 4 years is due this year.

Hi frozzu, I have the 80ps engine in my 1422cc PD Fabia Estate. My book says the same as yours, but VAG, like many manufacturers constantly review service work schedules if they believe there could be a potential for a problem, or an actual problem is identified. In the case of the 1422cc PD engine and the 1.9 PD engine where the belt is highly stressed due to it running not just the camshaft, but the unitary injectors as well, just a few belts failed early sometime ago. This led to the revised belt replacement times and mileages. Don't worry though, the engines are actually pretty bullet proof, one of the most trouble free engines you can buy. Just get it serviced correctly and all will be fine.

I had a letter off the dealers I bought the car from yesterday and they said that the cam belt is now due for a change.

There are two so called Skoda specialists in my local area but not sure what they are like.

Good news Fab. It is important and it shows the system works, at least in your case.

To be honest it seems the main Skoda stealers don't know, don't care or don't bother about the 4year cambelt issue, which is a little worrying.

It should not be our job to research these facts and tell the dealer.

My car was registered 26/10/07 and last serviced 28/10/11, which is clearly 4 years old. Not a word, as I said earlier.

I am going to send a copy of the invoice in a strongly worded complaint to Skoda UK.

I would encourage others who have experienced this lack of care to do the same.

If they are careless about Cambelt, how do we know what other things they let slip.

If a Cambelt goes after 4 year and out of warranty, it's your pocket that will be covering the engine repair, which could easily be four figures.

We pay a lot of money to the dealers and Skoda, Skoda need to stress to the dealers about getting this right.

Otherwise their reputation and our faith in them is gone.

I voted with my wallet and used an independent specialist with a good reputation and decades of former main dealer expertise.

It is not my job to tell the dealers what they need to advise me, they have lost my custom.

I will not buy a sump plug washer from them, let alone another car.

The recent thread below is highly relevant to this topic. Many are of the opinion that 40,000 miles is unnecessarily early for a cam belt change on a PD TDi. My fabia turned 4 recently, but at 32,000 miles I was loathe to change the cam belt. I took my fab to an excellent, trustworthy independent garage for its annual service and MOT (had previously used dealer) and three mechanics I spoke to there who have worked on hundreds of PD TDis told me they wouldn't consider chaning the cam belt until 50,000 - none had seen a cam belt with significant wear even at that mileage. Still, use your own judgement and get it changed if your mind won't be at peace otherwise...

Quite an interesting thread.

I got it done yesterday and know I won't need to do it again, the belt work is covered for 2yrs too.

Like you say it's unlikely to happen but not unknown.

I'm paranoid due to the age, not the mileage. I have had other rubber parts die prematurely on this vehicle, bad enough to fail an Mot at 36k.

What's needed is clarity, the service manuals are wrong, vw seem to say another thing on their website and there's loads of opinions at garages and forums.

Ps I'm still not going back to the dealers......

I'd stick with the manufacturers recommendation for your model, always. Much of the wear to a cambelt cannot be seen. It's on the inside!
