1.8T Smoking like a good 'un

Featured Replies

I was followingg my mate in his Leon Cupra 1.8T AUQ the othe day.

All was well until he hit the gas on a slip road, as he took off(on boost)he let out a load of black smoke.

The car hs always used a lot of oil, so I'm guessing a seal somehwere.

Any thoughts ??

If it's oil it's usually blue/grey and will smell of oil. If it's black smoke then that can be a sign of fuel being burnt post combustion or running rich. Is it remapped?

The two places oil could be leaking and getting into the exhaust gasses are at the valve stem oil seals or at the turbo oil seals. Normally if the turbo oil seals are well and truly stuffed though you'd get a James Band smokescreen behind the car!

if your lucky it might be just a split in one of the intercooler pipes £40 for new one had the same problem on my old mondeo

Nah not mapped, didn't notice a stink either although it was a short lived blip on the gas as there was traffic.

Not quite 007 style but could have been mistaken for a derv !!

oh dear, defo check for a boost leak. I do always ask mates after they've followed me, if mine smokes, fortunately it never has.

I am having similar issues, how can one check for a boost leak?

Most good garages can run whats called a smoke test to check for boost leaks.

Since this post I learn't that black smoke is usually unburnt fuel, my mate did change his temp sensor which IIRC cured a load of problems he had.
