Shark Performance Self tuning system

Featured Replies

Just been looking at the Shark stage 1 re-map for my fab vrs estate.

Has anyone had this done?

Also, thinking to get it as the self-tuning kit, as my car is a company car, I can reset the original ecu if needs be.

Has anyone taken this option too?

Thanks in advance.

I don't believe the self tuning option can be used with the new vRS as it works through the OBD port and it's locked out for tuning purposes.

Ah this is a shame if its true! It would have been the perfect option for me.

If you go to any of the tuners for a remap, you can go back to them to remove the remap and get the complete 100% stock file loaded back on the car. (They might charge you £50 for the labour though)

Just aboyut 100% positive i'm afraid mate as the vRS ECU needs to be opened up to begin with the remap it.

I looked at the sts for my vrs and got it confirmed from Shark themselves that it is not compatible with the mk2 vrs ecu.

Another option some have gone down is a tmc tuning box. Can be removed whenever you want.

REV and APR allow you to switch maps.

REVO will allow you to turn the remap to setting A(sometimes known as 1) which lowers the settings of the revo map so that it emulates stock performance. You need to purchase the SPS switch to do this though.

APR will allow you to switch to the 100% stock map via the cruise control stalk. Obviously if you dont have cruise control then this isnt an option.

But do they have to remove the ecu for the map to be applied I thought they did?

Stupid question time! I have seen comments about remaps getting overwritten by dealers applying software updates to the ecu. Do the dealers have to remove the ecu todo this? If not, will the remappers be able to get round theissue at somepoint?

Yes mate. Every tuners have to remove the ECU and open it in order to bypass the encryption. Some tuners might still solder some wires on there temporarily to allow them access however most just use a test probe.

The dealers can of course load their maps via the OBDII socket below thge steering wheel because they have the code to bypass the encryption. When the cars get serviced the dealers might overwrite the remap with an update, however this isnt an issue. NOrmally the tuners like this as it means they then get to see what changes have been made so they can apply it on their own maps and will then reload your remap onto the car for you. Theres normaly no charge for this iirc, and if there is, then it might be a small labour charge to cover the smal time they spend working on the car.

Will the tuners get around this? I very much doubt it. They have a way of accessing it which works very well already so id expect them just to carry on. The problem is VAG keep changing the encryptions so breaking the code isnt really an option. Opening it up and bypassing the encryption is probably the easiest way.
