Replace all locks?

Featured Replies

My wife's 2001 Fabia was stolen and has since been recovered. The thiefs gained acess to the car by stealing the key from our house.

As the car is still in good confition, we purchase the car back as part of the insurance settlement. I want to change all the locks including the ignition barrel, do I also need to change the immobiliser? How hard is the job of changing the locks?

Good question but better posted on 'Fabia 1 ' section for better response.

Door locks probably not too difficult but steering lock/ immobiliser will probably need a bit of expert attention.

Won't the insurance do it for you?

I assume the Insurance did not do it because it was beyond economic repair.

Which is why you can get a settlement and then buy the vehicle back.

(& why you have to repair it cheaper than they could have it done for.)

fluke,

if you do not mind i will not give advice on Immobollsers or keys/locks etc on a Forum,

the Immoboliser is about the only security we have when our keys do not get stolen.

Just take your V5 to a Dealers spares Department and price up the parts and enquire as to what you need to purchase.

Maybe get a price at an Independent or Body shop as to getting assistance if you require that.

Maybe check out a Breakers Yard for a similar Write Off that you can get the parts from and advice from the same breaker.

Any dodgy car ringer in your area will know exactly what you need to do.

(Probably even know who had your original keys that were stolen)

Change the locks and get the existing keys removed from the immobilizer - simple VCDS job once you have the SKC.

Once done the old keys will obviously not open the locks and the transponders in the old keys will no longer be recognised by the immobiliser. .. Job done.

Wouldn't it be easier to get a 3rd party alarm immob fitted?

I did buy my car back and as one key is now missing (the thief is back inside) the plan was to just replace the locks as a matter of caution.

I can get a set of locks from eBay for about £50, but wasn't sure if a 2001 Fabia key has a transponder. I know it's an old car now, but it only has 56k on the clock.
