Adding ICE , extra weight

Featured Replies

The Octavia VRS is already a heavy beast. I want to add my Vibe 12" sub and amp out of my old car to the Octavia, but will the extra weight of these items affect the performance alot?? Will it affect the 0-60 or will it make no difference?

Putting a big sub and amp in any car is going to add a fair bit of weight, more if you have to build MDF boxes etc to hold it all. And as they're usually fitted in the boot of cars you are putting more weight at the back end which doesn't help front end grip.

Personally I have never bothered upgrading the sound systems in my cars, I had a sub and amp in my first ever car (Mk2 Fiesta) with an MDF boot floor and it accelerated and handled like a bag of ****. After that I've not bothered changing anything apart from headunits. I'd rather have a quick car than a loud car LOL

seriously are you bothered? A remapped VRS with 210bhp isn't really going to notice 15kgs of Sub and amp. 5 up and with my ICE it still goes like stink. Maybe you could drive around with 15l of less petrol in the tank.......

Unless you are looking to track the car then I wouldn't worry at all.

The weight of your sub and amp will probably be the same ball-park as your spare tyre

The majority of weight is in the MDF (I'm assuming its MDF). From a weight distribution point of view, place it up against the rear seats, above the rear axle.

In real-world driving terms, the weight of a passenger (average european male weight is 84Kg) is much more detrimental.

If you want light-weight audio you need to replace materials like MDF with GRP, dynomat (lead-flushing) with Spectrum Sludge, etc

I would say day today it isn't going to make alot of difference, if you do want to run down the pod ect then just take it out for the day. To get a rough idea of the difference just throw something of similar weight in the boot and take for a blast. It's all down to personal pref!!

+1; excellent point

15kg I wish my 18" kicker and all gubbins weighs 63kg. My cars 220bhp and to be honest i dont notice the extra weight.

That's pretty much the equivalent of having an extra person in the car

Feck, I doubt your average install will way anywhere near this though.

I had a similar issue however it wasn't the ICE install that was the problem. It was the ex wife that liked too much cake. Problem easily solved when I got rid of her and now have a super slim chick and also two amps and a sub. Performance is now about the same if not better than before and I have decent sounds and not the constant noise of sweets and cake being munched in the passenger seat ! Win !

Kicker comp vr sub and its just a 1"thick box that fits nicely under the parcel shelf with the amp mounted to the back. So as to hide all the cables and still plenty of boot space. Unsure of how to upload photos on my phone.

I have a full on boot build going on and I don't notice it at all. TBH, how much does a spare alloy weigh? Probably as much as my boot build, which is currently in its place.

At the end of the day, I can't speed everywhere, so I choose to cruise with a decent quality sound. but if needs must I can happily put the boot down and not notice the weight.
