99 Octy TDI Oil Pressure Light

Featured Replies

A couple of times in the past few months the low oil pressure light has started flashing in my Octy. I've read about the problem which seems to afflict the VRS with blocked oil pickups in the sump but can't find a reference to this happening on the diesel.

If mine starts flashing it is normally in the 1st 5-10 minutes of running. Stopping the engine and restarting straight away never sees the light come on again which suggests maybe a sensor/electrical fault. I've also noticed that the beep no longer sounds when I get low on fuel and no alarm sounds with the low oil light.

What do you folks reckon?

Cheers,

Mark.

You need to scan it for any fault codes logged and replace oil pressure switch.

Is the light red (low presure) or orange (low level)?

Either way, as above start with getting the fault codes read.

A '99 SLX doesn't have an oil level sensor so it is an oil level warning you see.

Your car has exactly the same oil pickup as the petrol but it is extremely rare for it to become blocked on a diesel and usually means the wrong oil is used or is too old.

You can often get the warning to go off by switching off the engine - back flow through the pickup clears the gauze.

Have you tried changing the oil?

for what it is worth and the hassle involved, i personally would drop the sump and check or replace the oil pickup pipe.. ive just had a similar problem with my 1.9tdi and it totalled the turbo.. the oil change was a few months overdue and the oil changed into a grease like substance, blocking the pickup and starving the turbo of oil.. not a good day :(

failing that it would probably be a good idea to have the oil pressure checked- better safe than sorry?

I think I will start with reading any codes, Its only done 100k and oil has been changed every 6k since it hit 60k miles and dropped out of the main dealer servicing, I'd hope that the pickup is ok, I only changed the oil about 4 weeks ago.

Cheers for the input folks. :)
