Lumpy idle & crap throttle response on 1.4 mpi

Featured Replies

Just done a search but couldn't find anything, even though I'm sure it's a common fault :)

Anyways whilst the cars idling the car feels very shakey, when looking under the bonnet it sounds very tappy. Also upon pressing the throttle it takes about half a second to rev, I checked the throttle body which seems clean and all the breather pipes are clear of gunk, could the throttle position sensor be at fault? (if there is one?)

Thank you in advance :)

I'm on tap talk so can't view how long you've been a member etc so my first question is how long have you owned the car? The reason I ask is the idle on the mpi is quite rough compared to modern engines and a lot of new owners notice it. The engine noise could be several things, the OHV pushrods design has the rocker cover at the top of the engine, this isn't quiet, the aux belt pulleys can get noisy as can the chain with age/mileage but each of those produce a different noise. If it'll help I can upload a video of my idle with audio for comparison?

I've owned it now for about a week, I had read that the engines are quite weak, I replaced the timing chain and waterpump the day I got it so thought it might be that wearing in? Also what could cause the crap throttle response?

I will try get a video tomorrow, will be working on the Astra do anything I can check on the skoda I will check :)

Where did you get your timing chain from? People have had issues with the markings being a tooth out, I know Jorily guarantee they are correct now but other kits may not be.

In general 68bhp is just about enough for most occasions though obviously limits overtakes and it's not the quickest to 60 but it'll happily do speeds in excess of 70mph and cruise at 70+ all day long. People report issues with hills but if you use a little common sense you won't have an issue, peak torque is at 2.5k, as long as you keep the revs closer to 3k going up them and as they start to fall change down you won't have any problems, be lazy and try and accelerate up them in 5th changing down when you notice you're loosing momentum and you're in for a less pleasant experience but I'd blame the driver not the engine.
