Humming noise when I steer left

Featured Replies

Hi my fabia makes an awful humming noise when I steer left. Took it to a garage who said it was the brakes - so got new front discs and pads - noise was still there - they said it was the tracking rod end, but brakes needed done anyway - they fixed the tracking rod end - noise still there.

Looking at various sites on the internet I'm wondering if it is the offside front wheel bearings.

Does this sound right?

Anyone know how much it would cost to fix - not that I've any money left now - but I am seriously worried that my garage is ripping me off!

defo wheels bearing, my nova is doing this now. turn left or go straight and no noise but as soon as you turn right even a little bit then a slight rumble is present.

sounds more like the garage is rubbish in all honesty :o

Yeah confirms all my fears - about car and garage - any ideas how expensive a job this is - or is it any easy DIY job (by easy I mean something that someone who can do fairly simple jobs like oil change & brake pads can tackle without a huge range of tools)

never done a front wheel bearing before only the rears on my old focus. to be safe you would need a trolley jack, axle stands , hammers and a decent socket set and spanner set. i'm sure someone else has done it at some point and can give better advice :)

Sounds like I could probably do it - maybe not too safely but!

Anyone had this job done by a garage? How much did it set you back?

I can't see the bearings listed as separate items on ETKA. However wheel hub with bearing is listed at

Hi.

Just check that it is a front bearing. I've had a rear bearing give same effect - also a rear causing pull to the left. Garage kept retracking, new shocks etc etc. If it is front then likely to be very tight and hard to get off. Need good puller.

It's not the cheapest thing but I'd say not a DIY job unless you have a proper extractor tool for it.
