Starting problems

Hi guys, have come looking for a little help - I don't know a huge amount about cars, but have fixed some basic issues before with the help of advice and a Haynes manual!

My car has started to make a noise when starting - hard to describe maybe a whirring noise that lasts for a few seconds (starter motor?). Once started the car seems to run absolutely fine. I've also had a little trouble starting from cold on a couple of occasions - has struggled on the first turn of they key but leaving it a second and trying again the car starts fine.

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it? I'm planning to sell the car soon and would prefer the problem gone.
