Hey guys, Unfortunatly my diff blew a hole the other day so I'm in search of a gearbox and diff for it! Can anyone help out? I'm after a cheap(ish) solution but I'm open to whatever I guess. So does anyone know of anything going for sale! Message me or email me. [email protected] thanks guys

How did you manage that, i thought these boxes were just about bomb proof altho seem to hear more and more reports of people breaking them,

Look in the for sale section there is plenty of people breaking VRS's and these boxes go quiet cheap on ebay aswell

Haha yeh I know dude I thought that aswell. But it's done 107k so I can put it down to wear and tear! Unfortunatly though I dont think it helps with the way I drive. I'm not saying I'm a bad driver because I take great care. But I like to drive my car hard once in a while. But yeh thanks for your advise mate

the gearbox is strong,the diff isnt,diff held together by rivets,they wear/break and the remaines exit via gearbox housing

You know what funny you should say that because after i took te gearbox out I took it Appart and there was shrapnel all around the gearbox/diff and when I looked inside it was a rivet from the diff then had sheared off and just ruined everything else inside te gearbox. Blew massive dent/ tiny hole in the clutch housing of the gearbox. Luckily no oil leaked inside thank god! So the clutch is still fine. But yeh new gearbox job lol. You would have thought it would have been build a bit better. Can you upgrade it to a better gearbox from other VAG cars. Any recommendations?

Yeah you can do 6 speed conversion but you have to change clutch, linkage cable, gearbox mount and driveshafts aswell for it to fit.

I looked into it when my clutch died but decieded against it as bits for 5 speed box were cheaper

Take gearbox apart and replace the rivits with bolts has been mentioned before

I love the lazy 5 speed box!! You can do 45mph in 1st gear

mine did the same but 400 quid for a re build as diff needs replacing :( i have two boxes now one with a hole in bottom from another vrs and my rivet damaged on with 2 teeth nearly completly missing off crown wheel from 135,000 miles

My diff ate it's self last week @136K

Haha oh god!! Well theres is DEFINATLY a pattern here. I suggest anyone with a gearbox between 100,000 and 140,000, start looking at a rebuild or a replacement. Its a massive pain in the arae when it goes and your car less for a while. Also if anyone replaces a gearbox, if you have some mechanical experience......do it yourself! It's not that hard at all. I took mine out in an hour an half! I'm going to make a project diary up so ill try and leave a half decent step by step on how to do it!

lol yes the toffee these boxes are made of falls off at 130 ish lol

think billy has one for sale in the for sale section, i sold one on ebay not long ago for about £130ish, they are cheap and not hard to change.

Buy a new box fit LSD bolted in!! Job done.
