started with car thinking its permanently in reverse, then the auto dimming function on the rear view mirror stopped working (green light still on though), now the rear courtesy lights only work intermittently... usually only one or the other works. any ideas anyone? no water ingress problems and the car is kept garaged.

Where have you checked for water?

have checked the carpets for dampness... seems to be the usual problem?

When I had my water problem the carpet was dry the water was in the false floor section where the wiring and connectors are.

The auto dimming rear view mirror not working could be due to the car thinking that its in reverse as this function is inhibited when reversing - so maybe that is one thing less to try to sort out.
