Matched wear on tyres

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Quick question - I came out of the office tonight to find my front nearside tyre completely flat with a nail in the tread, too close to the sidewall to repair.

Can anyone tell me what it's like driving a VRS with unmatched tyres, the last car I had with low-ish profile tyres was a nightmare. Is it worth replacing both front tyres?

I was thinking if I replaced both I'd keep the 1/2 worn one incase this happens again. Unfortunately this needs sorted asap as I've only got a stupid space saver.

Cheers

Iain

I've driven on unmatched tyres with lower profile than the fab on my Ibiza, it's been alright, I'd stick em on the back probably and have a matched pair up front.

Au contraire; common sense would say put the matched set at the back. It's a FWD car, you have literally zero control over what your rear wheels are doing, so you want everything ship-shape back there, and any handling irregularities on the FRONT wheels, where you have control over the steering angle AND the amount of torque created.

Thanks for the input guys,

To be fair the last car I had with low profiles had well over 250bhp on the front wheels and suffered massively from torque steer in perfect conditions let alone if you gave it an excuse like dodgy tyres.

Still, I'm a bit wary so I've bit the bullet and gone for two Uniroyal Rainsport 2s which will be fitted on saturday, thankfully for complicated and unmentionable reasons we currently have 3 cars between two of us so I can afford to wait until the weekend to get this sorted otherwise it'd have been a trip to quack-fat (kwik-fit).

The Uniroyals seem to get a pretty good write up online and there's a few posts here as well and they weren't too expensive (still enough to smart) at £168 fitted from BlackCircles. Hopefully they'll be ok as I'm planning on doing a good bit of miles bombing around the north of Scotland next week.

Cheers

Iain

Had this dilema two weeks ago on tyres that had only coved about 5k, ended up replacing the two.

I've got 4 different tyres on my car (they are all the same size) and never had a problem. But then I don't exctly hurtle around everywhere and 205/55 isn't really low profile.
