Air Conditioning Not Working?

Featured Replies

Quick Question,

Air con stopped working today, when I press the Air Con button I hear a 'Empty Pipe' kinda sound could this just be the Air Con needs re-gassing or is it something more serious?

Many Thanks

E

Hook your car up to VAG-COM. If you car is low on refridgerant then a fault code will be logged. In my opinion a sudden loss of your A/C points to something serious, either a rapid loss of refridgerant due to a ruptured condenser, or a failure of your compressor. VAG-COM should be able to tell you.

Thanks for this, VAG ordered and ill let you know if there are any issues!

Read the fault codes just in case but I suspect you'll have to get the system vac tested by a competent garage.

Just a side note, the car is performing fine throughout, air on works but when u press the ac button the 'hollow pipe' / airasol sound starts up. No drop in performance just an annoying sound and no change in air tempreture.

Thanks for all your replies so far!

Mine makes no noise atall and make no difference to how cool the air is. Hoping it's just empty

I get exactly the same thing!! I hit the A/C button and all I get is the tinny Hollow Pipe noise and no cold air... as you said No loss in performance either though??

Keep us posted If you find out what it is!! I'd be interested to find out :|

I just started getting this noise as well and the temp isnt dropping. Had mine re-gassed a few months ago so would love to know the outcome of your problem so I can fix it.

Same here. Mine wasn't working at all, so I regassed it today.

A/C now kicks in but almost instantly there is a hollow, hissing noise. Sounds like it is coming from behind the dash.

Faulty mixer flap? Again it should log a fault code.

Just scanned mine and got this result

00819 - High Pressure Sensor (G65): Signal too Low

Possible Symptoms

Climate Control stuck in ECON Mode

Possible Causes

Insufficient Refrigerant Pressure Wiring/Connectors from/to High Pressure Sensor (G65) faulty High Pressure Sensor (G65) faulty

Possible Solutions

Check Refrigerant Pressure Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) Check Wiring/Connectors from/to High Pressure Sensor (G65) Check High Pressure Sensor (G65)

Thanks for the info. Where is the high pressure sensor so I can check it out.

Cheers

Quick update on mine.

After re-gassing mine, the system would run as there was a noticeable dip in the revs when I hit the A/C button. It just wasn't cool.

I then decided to go back out and check the pressure and topped it up whilst the system was running (as the instructions said). After doing this mine is now working correctly - i.e cooling the air. It is still making the noise inside the cabin though.

I did a bit of google-ing earlier and some reckon that the noise is a sign of insufficient refrigerant. Some say that it's normal on some systems, so not sure. Will wait and see.

As a side note, whilst doing this I had the car running for a while, it's a warm day and the cooling fan was kicking on and off but only coming on for about 5 seconds on so. Is this normal? Related to the A/C regassing?

Cheers

Just been out to spend 20 minutes seeing if I could find something obvious and it's only then I realised that the actual A/C isn't kicking in when I press the switch. No dip in revs or anything.

Would this suggest a wiring fault over a leak.

Low refrigerant level will also cause the A/C to not kick in as I'm sure it has a pressure switch which won't 'make' if there isn't enough gas.

I've seen reports of noisy systems in Polos, but only during a period a bit earlier than your car, dealer fix was to change the orifice as it had been spec'd "unwisely" as it turns out!

From my experience with a Octy and Fabia the A/C units are rubbish, previouse car a Hyundi was like sitting in a deep freeze unit.

my AC has been hissing recently aswell and no cold air what so ever

took it down to a garage today to get a regas

ac1s.jpg

ac2sl.jpg

Machine they use is a Cool Tech AC650

Recovered 00.350kg, no leaks and charged 00.575kg, no oil recovered or charged.

Can confirm AC is now ice cold and no hissing noise so pretty impressed, £45 so not too bad.

all the person has to do is plug the leads into the AC outlets, punch in a few numbers and it does teh rest it self

it creates a vacuum in the pipe work for 20mins, then waits for 5 mins to see if the vacuum drops if not then no leaks - not sure how rock solid this test is though.

hope this helps

I had this same fault about a month ago sounded like hissing down an open ended pipe coming from behined the dash. Took it to work and put the gauges on and found it low on refrigerant so I topped it up with the system running and it's been fine ever since getting icy cold. Hope this helps, jim.

These auto recovery/vac/reload machines are made to be operated by anyone (as long as someone in the workshop has necessary qualifications). By using these approved machines, the workshop will never fall foul of the current regulations in respect of reloading a leaking system, but, slight leaks will not be picked up and so you might need to get it regassed frequently. Now, if you go to another workshop who has no record of previously carried out work, then its you that is nearest breaking the law as its your car that is getting regassed frequently. I'd still say get a proper AC place, or mobile AC sorter to work on these systems. These machines that dealer's workshops and independants workshops use are meant for reloading to "make up" what any system will lose over maybe 4 years, ie a simple machine that enables a non AC person - with correct certification, to carry out that task. My VW dealer claims my almost 12 year old Passat does not have any leaks as they used a machine like that on it, but I know it has a leak and where the leak is - the dealer is not really geared up to chase leaks so ignores what I've said and used the standard machine to check the system, so £95 later, system back working well (was resonably good before that work), but I know that this year it will have lost more liquid - really a buggar as I was trying to get it "fixed" not just reloaded and that was made clear when booking the car in - dealers know best!!

I still have this issue and want to get it sorted so as the high pressure switch is fairly cheap I want to replace it so it either fixes the issue or rules it out as the cause.

Question is can the switch be replaced by me or does system have to be emptied etc before the switch can be removed / replaced.

Cheers

The system has to be evacuated to allow fitment of the high pressure switch.

The fault code you have is most likely due to low gas pressure or no gas at all. My air con broke after a stone ruptured the condenser at the front of the car - the gas simply leaked away and the air con stopped working. The fault code that was logged was exactly the same as yours "high pressure sensor - signal too low". I had to take the car to an aircon specialist who used a special UV sniffer to detect where the gas was leaking from. After they diagnosed a leak from the condenser they replaced it with a new one and recharged the system. It was a costly repair - £500 !!!
