Electric motor speed controller

Featured Replies

I need to slow down the motor of my pipe organ blower, to reduce the pressure of wind and make the pipes sound better. I understand that it's a synchronous motor so I can't just use a dimmer switch or rheostatic speed controller as this would cause overheating. It seems that it could be done with a single phase inverter but I can't find one on the web, they're always three phase output. Also, there's a honking great starter condenser on the side of the motor body with more than two wires disappearing into the body.

Any ideas? I can post more details and photos if necessary. It's only about 120W rating so don't need anything too massive.

Thanks in advance.

You have the wrong kind of motor. The advantage of the synchronous motor is that its speed doesn't change with load.

With a single phase inverter you are creating a variable frequency mains supply, which is overkill.

Why not try a mechanical solution such as leaking air from the blower output.
