1.2 SPORT any good?

Featured Replies

Hi all

We're looking at buying a 2005 Fabia 1.2 HPT Sport. Does anyone have any knowledge of this car and if so how do you rate it?

We were going for a VRS, but cost got in the way unfortunately and the Sport does seem a nice alternative??

Tanks.

Its nowhere near the RS, but its a good car nonetheless. There's one in my neighbourhood.

If you want an RS alternative, go for the TDI, the 100bhp petrol 1.4 or the 2.0 petrol. Although I hear there are issues with the latter.

Thanks, yes we tested the VRS and boy does it go! Really loved it, but an '05 version, with similiar miles, is almost twice the price of the Sport! What with a little one and things as they are (fuel prices) we decided its just too expensive. Shame really, but without alot of wedge and needing a new car, what could we do.....

Thanks again anyway.

Anyone had some experience of the 1.2HTP engine? Any good? Do they idle abit ruffly?

Nippy, not outright fast, but quick enough around town. Will need pushing on motorways though.

The 3-pot is very good engine, sounds really good I reckon. Loves to rev :)

Is this the same engine as the VW 1.2 TSi? If so it's a cracker. I have had a couple of Golf 1.2 hire cars recently and been really impressed around town and on rural roads. The only fault was on long motorway incline where it tends to run out of puff.

No, its not.

The HTP is a very good little engine. It cheap, reliable and pretty easy to work with. The feel and the sound kinda reminds me of early boxer engines. You can forget power at high speeds, i managed to get one (Fabia Compis 1.2) up to 100mph, which is supposed to be the top speed. But that engine had been modified. I dunno if a stock 1.2 can manage that. But I can tell you that acceleration above 75-80 is close to non-existent. Its very quick and responsive at lower speeds however. In city traffic, its a dream.

Keep in mind that the HTP is the replacement for the 1.4MPI.

No, the HTP is the older 1.2 16v 3-cylinder.

No, the HTP is the older 1.2 16v 3-cylinder.

It was either 6 or 12 valve. As far as I know, no there were no 16v 3 cyl engines.

Yes. You are right. The sun has melted the part of my mind that does maths!

It's no ball of fire but the 12valver is willing and likes to rev. It sounds nice if you like that sort of thing as well. Only criticism i had with the ones that I have had on loan were mediocre fuel consumption but i did drive them hard :)

Thanks guys, I'm very impressed with your knowledge of the car! So the car we are getting is black (the Sports ALL seem to be black) with 1 owner, FSH with Skoda dealers and 62,000 miles. Does it sound like a good buy?

BTW we have the 1.4MPI now, so its interesting that the 1.2 HTP is the replacement for it! Thanks again in advance.

Yeah does sound like a good buy :) You will probably find that if you have an mpi that it will feel more eager at low speed thanks to the torque advantage (if it is an 8 valver) but the 1.2 HTP will be smoother and freer revving :)

Thanks, nice reply! Yes I did find the 12 valver easy to rev, much more so than the 1.4 8v, which seems to me abit hmmm outdated now! thanks.

No problem oh and I forgot to mention that it is a Skoda designed and built engine too :)

BTW what did you pay if you don't mind my asking?

Well it was around 3k, does that sound about right?

Sounds like you have got a good deal :)

Thanks.

Does anyone know what the tyre pressures are, front and rear respectively, for the Sport 1.2?

Are they not inside the fuel filler cap? I know my vrs has them there. Should be in the handbook but no idea for this engine. My vrs is 2.3 bar all round.
