Turbo has gone.... gah.

Featured Replies

Evening all. So the turbo gave up this morning whilst in the outside lane. Power cut out, coasted to a halt. Wouldn't start again. AA towed me to the local indy who have diagnosed a broken turbo.

Expensive day. Car was due to tick over 130,000 miles.

Gutted for you mate, most peoples worst fear I reckon.

Done much damage?

Thanks fellas

Re damage, hopefully not, apparently the shaft seized solid? not seen it myself yet. hopefully that means the intercooler is ok.

Guess if I fix this, and do the clutch and DMF soon then it should be good for a while?

Bad times mate, hope it's not gonna cost you to much and the damage is only to the busted turbo.

Mines done 135k miles not had that long, is there anyway of checking if my car still has the original turbo or it's been replaced? I presume you get no prior warning to this kind of failure?

If there were any warning signs then I certainly didn't notice them! New Garrett turbo going on, not a cheap job.

I no the feeling mine only went wednesday.I will hopefully be going hybrid. If your sticking with a pd 130 turbo dynamics do exchange and i think its about 450 inc vat thats for genuine garret turbo.

A bit worried now as I don't know if mine has had a replacement turbo in it's 135k, hoping it has....

Dont worry about it theres lots on here running alot more miles on the original unit

Personally, I doubt TD would do that exchange on a broken KKK. I don't think they even recondition Garrett's anymore, only hybridise new units, so a blown KKK is pretty much worthless.

KKK was original fit, was it? Garage said it was a new Garrett, but the original would go back on exchange. Not sure who they source turbos from though.

I'm under the impression that the Fabia/Ibiza PD130s used KKK which is why turbo failures are more common on them than Golf/Passat PD130s which use Garrett as factory fits. Could be wrong, of course, but turbo failures certainly seem more common in this section than anywhere else I read about VW TDI engines (uk-mkivs, SCN, etc)

Yeah fabia`s had KKK turbos.

well its about 500 for a kkk on turbo dynamics i think

Mine is on 89,000 and it's already had a turbo a year ago. Just before I got it luckily.

Yup KKK's are pretty lousy tbh, mine went last week and I've now sourced a nice hybrid PD150 garrett.

Is there any way for me check which turbo my car has bolted on? Doesn't seem easy to see from the top of the engine, maybe i'll take the cover off and try and have a better look. :)

Just been into the garage, they showed me the remains of the impeller. A couple tiny bits.... the rest went up the intake system and the intercooler.
