What does this DSG error mean?

I have a 2007 Octavia DSG 105 PD with 102k kms on it. In a recent scan at the dealer the gearbox threw an error which read:

'Multiclutch adaptation limit reached'

The dealer promptly said that I will have to get the multiclutch (the dual clutch/flywheel in the DSG) replaced. However I was not too sure if this error really waranted a multiclutch change (at 550 bucks it isn't cheap).

Anyone here has any idea what the error actually means and around what mileage would the multiclutch/flywheel need a change in the DSG? I have no rattles and jerks from the transmission as of now.

It would be a bit early for a new clutch I would have thought even if that does seem to be what the error message is saying. Four years and barely sixty thousand miles in I would be well cheesed off. Is there a lot of stop start in that mileage?

Thanks for the quick reply. The car has done far more city miles than highway miles but it's not as if it does stop start traffic everyday.

479,000kms on mine and its still on its original clutch.

It sounds like the clutch pack has reached it's wear limit according to the sensors, a bit premature for a wet multi-plate clutch arrangement I would have thought. If you do have to have it replaced then it may be worth getting in touch with Skoda to see if they would like to help you out with the cost.

It's not that unusual to replace the K1 clutch pack (1,3,5) at 60k miles if the car has spent a lot of it's time inching along in traffic. Driving style does make a difference - there is a big difference between moving a foot ten times and moving ten feet once.

Thanks Ian. Premature is the exact thought I have in my mind. Skoda wont spare a dime over here (am based out of India) - pretty sure of that. The state of Skoda after sales here is such that the competence of the servicing personnel itself is a big issue. For a good 15 minutes everybody at the authorised srevice center were scratching their heads after seeing the error.

By K1 clutch pack do you mean one of the clutch plates (that engages 1, 3 and 5)? I thought the entire multiclucth assembly is one part and it is not possible to change individual plates in isolation. While I do agree with your point on higher wear and tear in case of stop start driving, I really do believe that the car has not been in such situations too often to warrant a clutch change so soon.

The only other factor that might have played a part is the heat - it really is very hot during summers over here and summers do last a good 6+ months. Considering that its a wet clutch system the oil might have heated up often and that might have lead to higher wear and tear. The biggest question however is that if there are absolutely no rattles/lurchs etc. during idle or gear changes from the DSG should I still go ahead and get the multiclutch changed? Or should I wait till I start experiencing specific issues?
