High idling revs, lots of noise from the fan and no start/stop..

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

Great resource here, I've already used Briskoda to fit a sunglasses case to my Greenline II despite my lack of practical skills, and am even tempted by the under-seat storage :)

I've got a slightly puzzling thing going on at the moment, and it's the second time it has happened since about mid-April (I've owned the car since March)

Basically, the engine idles either at about 1100, 1200rpm or it idles lower until I take out the clutch for the auto start/stop, at which point it blips up to higher revs and tells me start/stop isn't possible. At no point recently has it been possible where it would have been before.

Coupled with this, the fan seems to be going hell for leather - it was fine in our hot weather last week/week before, but now it makes a lot of noise and keeps going full pelt for a while after taking the key out of the ignition. I've had a quick look inside and it's not obviously damaged in any way, nor is the radiator.

After reading another thread, I thought it could be the diesel particle filter, my understanding being that it needs to burn off the excess soot from time to time, but I haven't had the light come on and I've recently had a long-ish journey (Bath to Southampton on Thursday), so I wonder if it might be something else.. As I say, it has happened before and then it just sort of fixed itself. I thought last time that it might have just been cross with me for letting it get very low on fuel, but I've not done any such thing this time.

Anyway, any help would be very much appreciated!! I just thought I should double check if it's something I need to get looked at or not.

All the best

Fred

Sounds like it might be trying to do a DPF regen (fan on as I gather it generates a lot of underbonnet heat during the process). Surely the light only comes on to say it needs one and can't?

The DPF light as pointed out only comes on due to a fault with the DPF regen. High idle RPM, fan and no start/stop are all symptoms of the car behaving normally and doing a DPF regen. As this is normal, you get no warning lights on the dash.

As an ex Greenline II owner and now own a 1.6TDI the car is just doing a regeneration of the DPF.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. I have a 2013 Fabia Greenline and occasionally and seemingly whether the engine is hot or cold, the idle speed won't drop below 1200rpm. At the same time the cooling fan is going and the stop/start won't work. I get no dashboard warning light and it can happen for the whole journey into work (about 20 minutes). Is this normal DPF stuff or should I get it checked?

Just normal for an active regen. If it keeps happening frequently you could either be interrupting the regen so it starts again or you have a faulty sensor issue.
