Do TFSI use oil?

Featured Replies

My vrs is going threw a lot of oil is this normal?

Graeme

Yes very normal

Some do, others don't.

It's more how much is being used over how many miles. What is yours using, and are you using normal or longlife? Any residue on the filler cap?

I do about 3/400 miles a week and its on long life I alway top it up with the corret oil and there is some times a bit of white on the filler cap

but just when the car is not being used much and not getting up to temp.

For some odd reason , if you top up to max on the dipstick , it uses it till it gets halfway then its fine , mine barely uses any but a lot seem to

There has always been huge variation between individual engines. I've had my 09 TFSI from new and in just over 3 years aside from normal service oil changes I've only topped it up myself (with regular checks) by around 3/4 of a litre (and that was mostly in the first year). Clearly sippers rather than gulpers are easier on the pocket, but whether there is a long term reliability difference between the two is a question I can't answer!

I do approx 660 to 700 miles a week and I'm using between 250 and 400 mm a week I'm using longlife edge oil think its castrol but it is the edge one I get mayo in oil cap after short runs been pressure tested never use water or over heats I honestly think its how the engine was treated at new and that's why there's so much difference between cars mines a 07 plate tfsi aswell mate

It's sometimes worth filling the oil to about half way between the midway and max mark, then taking it out for a drive.

Once it's warmed up, then give it a good hard drive and see if this helps.

Sometimes on older cars, you could glaze the bores, and so more oil could slip past.

Possibly more worthwhile, however would be to clean/replace the breather system parts, to make sure that you're not getting pressure build up in the pipes, and then head. That can lead to oil going where it ideally shouldn't and then being burnt.

Luckily, as people have said, it seems to be fairly normal for a TFSI engine to use some oil. Unluckily, it also likes to drink only the best stuff! Expensive habit!

Mine uses more oil than any car I've ever had previously. In fact, it makes me feel cheated when changing the oil - as I suspect that only about half the oil I'm taking out what actually the duff I put in at the last change.........

They say a change to 5W40 reduces consumption, im going to do that today, euro car parts are doing 5 litres of triple qx that meets VW spec 502 and 505 for £16.49 with BRISK25 discount code.

Would using 5w40 instead of 5w30 have an effect on fuel consumption as its a bit thicker?

Depending on your service plan Skoda recomend both, they are both 'low drag' so theres probably not much in it if anything.

For information, my 08 car has now done 42k and oil consumption over the last 30k has been totally consistent at 1/2 litre per 1000 miles. For some time now I've been zeroing the trip and checking the oil when it reaches 1000 and, sure enough, it needs 1/2 litre to top up to the full mark.

It certainly uses more oil than any previous(modern)car I've owned, but, as it continues to perform well and is getting no worse,I'm not concerned.

mine uses quite alot probably 1 ltr every 5-6 weeks, i use 5w40 now but it hasnt made much difference to how much it uses. i use quantum platinum 5w40.
