Oil question

Featured Replies

Hi,

Two easy questions for someone that knows:

1) When is it best to check the oil level of a mk2 fabia vrs, cold engine or warm engine?

2) What type of oil should I be using for the vrs?

Check when oil is upto temp on level ground once the car has sat for a few minutes.

Use the highest quality fully synthetic 5w30 you can get your hands on

In this thread you will see there is a post showing the VW (Polo Gti) owners manual pages which are possibly clearer than those in your Skoda OM.

Take care not to overfill, it does not take much oil to increase from requiring some oil to the correct level when the engine has been brought up to full running temp before letting it sit a few minutes.

get to 88 degrees celcius or so.

Obviously once you have checked a couple of times with a heated engine, you will be able to look at where that level is with cold oil, get to know the mark and be able to do a dip and check before starting the car if in doubt.

Looks like I need some oil, right at the bottom of the B section (as according to the manual), I know what I'm doing after work!

All sounds about right but you can use 5w40. My Skoda Garage uses it and they feel its slightly better for this engine. Again loads on this on other threads.

Car took just under a litre of oil, it had 6363 miles on it when I bought it on Sunday. Either the previous owner didn't top it up before selling or the garage didn't bother to check it while they had it advertised for the last two months. Presumably there would have been several test drives in it.

The dipstick shows oil right up to the edge of the hatch markings. Worth putting a put more in to take it slightly over these markings?

No.

Next time it is up to temp check that it is still up there at the top of the hatch or within that top quarter.

Have you had a look to see where that hot level is when cold?

it is not greatly different,

but it is good to know where that cold mark should be before firing it up.

Pathetic dip stick, but thats because i need to go to Spec Savers.

Garages are dipping cold or just warm, or not understanding the Cross Hatch.

Crappy system IMO.

& partly responsible for people including mechanics over filling the oil.
