Back box removal

Featured Replies

Hiya all,

Ive been reading about the mufflerectomy mod to the fabia, i was considering just taking the back box off for a little bit to see how it sounds which is effectively the same thing, just with a shorter pipe and no tip poking out of the bumper. No harm in trying that is there?

Regards

Jake

I wouldnt as the fumes wont be routed out from the car they will be coming out under it. Also I doubt the sound will give you a true idea of how a mufflerectomy sounds.

Also the vRS has a two part exhaust system so youll be removing more than just the back box it will be everything from the back box to the down pipe. So the exhaust will actually finish behind the front wheels (length wise)

What you saying? If I want to take off ye back box, I have to more or less remove the whole exhaust? And the system would be very short and finish at the front of the car? I know it won't be a 'fair test' but will give me a bit more idea of noise/chatter. Eventually will be doing a whole new 2.5" system from turbo. Just want something different on a temp basis

Jake

Yeah thats it mate theres a centre section which includes the back box (1 part) and then the down pipe/cat which is about 1.5ft in legth from the turbo to just behind the front wheels (1 part)

Oh right. So can't really do that idea then :( What happens if you need a new backbox then? You get a backbox and a bend of pipe ect attached to it?

VAG (vw) sell a sleeve and as I understand you get a backbox only and you cut your old one off just in front of the rear axle and then attach the new backbox with a metal sleeve and then it becomes a 3 part system.

Because mine was mufflerectomy'd and put back mine now has three sections. (like a normal car)

Right I understand. How easy is it to drop the whole lot from turbo? It it relatively accessible from underneath? Much work involved? I no its held on to the turbo by three bolts but don't no how easy they are to get to. Need to mock up new system and need to no bends ect..

Erm one bolt on the turbo is tricky from under the car and I did mine from in the engine bay.

The system will either need to be cut just in front of the rear axle to remove it or use a ramp as its impossible on a jack to get it out in one bit. Other than that its childs play.

Im going to forget the diy mufflerectomy thing i was talking about. Will just need to drop the whole system in oprner to mock up a new one. Is the flange on the downpipe going to the turbo made out of steel do you know? I E, will i be able to cut flange off old pipe and weld onto new one with a 2.5 inch stainless pipe?

  • Author

A diagram of the flange would be perfect saying that so i could get a new one made up

why not buy a cheap second hand one off ebay to use as a template?

it is steel yeah (flange)

sorry for putting you off mate :(

  • Author

dya know what that is quite a good idea, cheap fuked downpipe would be ideal so not only can i use the flange, but i can get the relevent bends mocked up too

Dont worry pal. Ive only had my fab 6 months so any help is much appriciated :)

I see your location isnt that far from me, ill have to keep an eye out for ya :)
