well just had my 30k service, great service again from border cars lillyhall, a very reasonable £87.45 .. here's minty up on the ramps...

I reported a slight knocking from the front suspension, not really a metallic noise, just more noisy than it used to be and had them check it...

they put it on the MOT ramp, and wow, gone are the days of a man waggling a wheel and stcking a crowbar in there ed china style, the machine rocked the car around and waggled the steering ect all by itself! (as the tech stood underneath with a torch) ...

seems I have a noise comming from my track rod end, or ball joint.... they have ordered the parts and are going to replace them both under warrenty next week...

I blame Cumbria's bumpy roads ;)

all in all not bad :)

That's a great price! And great service by the sounds of it...

Sounds like you got very good service & a very good price for it to

They let you stand in workshop and take pic of your car on ramp,

New mot ramps are ace

Nice to hear. I think it's something I'll have to look out for too as Swansea roads in particular are awful

i wasn't in the workshop, if you look at the distortion on the pic, I was sat in the "viewing area" behing wired glass! lol...and yes, the ramp was pretty cool!

it wasn't so much a knock... just 'noisy' suspension, a change from new.... lets see if the new parts fix it! I honestly didn't expect them to find anything ...

Yeah I'll have to ask next time when I have my first service can I watch. Now I have a new car it's the main thing I miss seeing. Which reminds me I need to see my mate about servicing the Swift. See if he'll let me borrow VCDS for 10 mins so I can make some adjustments

I like to watch ;) and the ramp in the pic isnt the MOT ramp (for those interested) it supports the wheels, and the whole lot goes up, and then it shakes everything around, moves the front wheels ect (they are on little grippy pads) you can even see the tyres stretch as if you were cornering!

You not seen a shaker before, Dave?

  • Author

nope..... last time i watched someone MOT one of my cars, it was a ramp like the one in the pic, and he was just physically manhandling the wheels to move them around and check for bush wear, steering play ect.......

that could have been a long time ago though! lol....

and I really like the viewing area, to be able to see whats going on is pretty cool.

My Friendly MOT Tester™ uses a shaker to find obvious ones, but gets old school with a big pry bar to find other issues :)

a pry bar, now thats Ed China syle ;)

Proper style! I generally just follow him around under the car - it's nice to see for yourself rather than just read it on a report

If you get stuck for VCDS mate let me know i'll hook you up

Yeah I may do

You should see the car ramps and lifts we have here at Starfleet Command! Sooooo...expensive too! Makes life a lot easier though. sharky, it's all those emergency stops I reckon caused your noisey suspension....

  • Author

quite possibly ;) I'd love to go to starfleet command ;) the noise really is just on that sort of "pattery" sroad suface you get, all broken up, and its just a little "knocy" I haven't noticed any problems with the steering, and have just ordered two new tyres, any the old ones are worn evenly.... steering wheel dead straight ect....

  • 2 weeks later...
  • Author

well cars done, new track rod end , all tracked up, steering dead straight.... all good (thanks border cars, washed and hoovered too)

but although its a bit quieter, I can still hear the noise! sounds like a drop link to me :(

I'm sure they found something, and wouldnt have replaced parts for nothing....

still.. loads of warrenty left, I'll bring it up next time im in :)

  • Author

to be honest ... its only a slight noise, you probably wouldnt notice if it wasnt your car... but its bugging me!
