Quick - Tuning Box On Ebay - 24 Hours To Go

Featured Replies

Hello

There's 24 hours left to run on a tuning box on ebay that seems to be TDI compatible.

Can loads of you express your views on this product (link below) - Matt - your insight would be appreciated too, as I think you have something similar.

The price is only at

I can't express views on the product since I don't own a diesel of any persuasion, but I can comment on the advert.

1. ...increase performance by up to 25%... - but even a 1% increase would allow the seller to claim that the device worked as claimed!

2. ...vastly increased power and torque... - even if you achieve the 25% increase above, that doesn't equate with 'vastly...' where vast = huge, boundless, exceedingly great etc

3. ...engine appears quieter and smoother - not the same as saying 'is smoother and quieter.'

4. ...Fuel consumption remains virtually the same - virtually is a meaningless word, the dictionary definition of which is In effect, though not in fact.

This ad is long on hype and short on factual claims. And who are the manufacturer and the seller? In short, FWIW, I wouldn't buy this type of mod through this medium.

Got to agree with Denis on this one...........what is the World coming to?:D

Not very obvious who makes this particular one Jason so i would be very cautious.

Thats very cheap - I wonder why?

Put the money towards a Jabba remap instead. Or maybe another idea is to pick up a second hand TB from the back of diesel car etc.

Jason,

you got to play safe on this one and don't do it..........yeah it's going cheap but think of the cost of replacing your engine if it all goes wrong. With a Jabba remap you're getting the real deal; a Hopa tuning box your getting proven technology.

IMHO of course.;)

Jason,

Have a look at the feedback. The seller has been selling these with 24hr auctions for quiet a few days now. a couple of these seem weird, eg. next day a response on how well a guys golf is running.

Ok - I was suspicious when I saw no brand on it. I'm going to steer clear then. I came THIS close (imagine 1cm gap between thumb and fore-finger) to buying it though... I'll await my remapping then next year, but I really liked the idea of it being able to be removed. Never mind!

Mod in haste repent at leisure :D

I'm still going for the eibach springs before the September meet! I'm past caring about my warranty, and springs are easy to "put back" in the event of a problem

Jason,

Jabba do a boost control switch so you can control the boost level infinately between standard upto the new remap level. The switch is also removeable. So you can set standard boost for servicing and remove the unit and nobody would be any wiser! Nice.

I'll being getting one of these myself sometime in the future as it retro-fit. I think it's around

I doubt it works on a diesel, but thats just my initial gut feeling.

If I get the car re-mapped after the warranty expires, I'm not going to care about the dealer noticing really as it won't affect them in the long run.

Cheers for all the advice, guys!

Was talking to Mike about the boost switch on Wednesday and he said that for there's an optimum boost setting for different atmospheric conditionsit's just a case of you finding it.

I'll ask about diesel engine, just out of interest, when I go up on Tuesday.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Jason

Some sensible advice above, which I'd like to add to.

I've had experience with 2 different tuning boxes over 70,000miles with 2 Audi diesels and they worked very well. A remap is preferable but don't rule them out as they can be both a cheaper AND reliable way to improving performance, especially if you buy secondhand.

If you buy Diesel Car magazine there are regularly the reputable branded Tuning Boxes advertised in the used classified ads. I sold my last one through that route for under half the price of a new one and it still had some warranty on it.

In summary (assuming you buy a reputable branded one):-

1) They do deliver extra performance - 20% is a fair expectation (ignore 30%-40% claims)

2) Buy one that is user-adjustable if you can. If you get more than a brief puff of black smoke,

you are over-fuelling too much. This doesn't cause damage in the way that it would in a petrol

engine, but is a fairly safe sign of how far you should go.

The ones I have had are Tuning Box (Siegerland) and Hopa (Cory Group, now through Bromleys?)

My 110 TDi Quattro gave 138bhp and 207lb/ft (from 110 and 173) on the rolling road.

My 150 TDi V6 Quat gave 179bhp and 285lb/ft (from 150 and 228).

Interesting, I fitted an Oettinger rechip to the V6 which gave a little more power and slightly less torque, but absolutely no black smoke. The Hopa (German Made) was great IMHO.

FINAL FOOTNOTE - You can remove any signs of extra power in 2 minutes flat. (As previous post - not sure if the Jabba boost controller works on diesel)

Hi Jason,

I've been looking at tuning boxes on Ebay as well and saw the "Tuning Box" one listed - I sent the seller an Email who couldn't confirm the mf'r so I wrote that one off.

But following my post re: Speedbuster box I have now bought one of these for

I may be tempted by

If you want a small boost, you could try optimax mate!

ps. don't blame me if you really do try it :)

Hehe - The court papers are in the post, Stimps!

Thankfully, I've never come even close to accidentally putting petrol in mine. The same goes for putting diesel in the petrol company runaround. One day... one day... it will happen! :)
