Wheel wobble causes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had some steering wheel wobble for a few weeks now when I get above 65mph and it's at its worst at 75mph. I had the front tyres replaced the other day as they were down to the wear markers and despite that it's still there and exactly the same.

The weird thing is if I am turning such as if the m'way has a slight camber or a bend it eases off and returns when I'm going straight. Doesn't happen at all under braking so we're not looking at warped discs.

I'm due to get the rears replaced shortly once Skoda pull finger from ass (and will try rotating the backs to the front to see if that makes any difference, such as buckled wheel etc) but I was wondering what else could cause wheel shimmy at speed?

My front drop links are screwed (new Lemforder set just bought from ECP sat in front of me waiting to be fitted) but that will only cure my knocking over low speed rough surfaces not this.

Could it be the wishbone rear bushes? Contemplating putting S3 ones in as voided ones are stupid.

Thanks in advance.

Chris.

P.S. If I am looking at a buckled wheel how much is it for a replacement zenith roughly?

Could still be an out of balance wheel.

Could still be an out of balance wheel.

Yeah, I'm suspecting the N/S front after I scuffed it and painted it up. It's been balanced as I say when the new tyres went on but something doesn't feel right.

Yup, think it's the wheel I "refurbished". Looked at it and the chap who balanced it up looks like he's struggled with it judging by the bucket load of weights in one place. I did have to take a lot of material off to flatten it before painting and whilst it looked ok I think I had to do too much. New wheel needed. :(

Will be able to prove it next week once the new tyres go on the back and I can put the back wheels on the front. If the wheel wobble goes away I've found it.

Think a new Zenith is about £240......unless I can get a used one in decent nick.

Hi all. Sorry to ressurect this but I'm still having issues. I've put the "iffy" wheel on the back (after having it balanced again) and had both fronts balanced twice by different places after the new tyres were put on - I still have wheel wobble the same as before the new tyres went on or the wheel was moved.

The thing that gets be is it's not all the time but is usually around m'way speeds - apply a slight turn to the wheel like on m'way camber and it fades quite a bit. Also it feels like I'm getting too much road feedback through the steering wheel in general now, where even the tiniest of road defects can cause the steering wheel to react.

What could this be? Wishbone bushes? I do have a slight knocking too occasionally when going over bumps especially when braking at the same time. The front end just feels a lot more loose than it used to. :(

I have a spare wheel you could try Chris, if you eliminate it full stop it does not cloud the issue

Sounds like your touching on it there mate, could it be inner end of drive shaft?

Thanks mate but I'm doubting balancing still. It seems to come and go depending on road surface and camber etc, as well as speed. This in combination with the knocking and the loose feeling (like duff ARB links but 10 times worse) makes me think more and more it's bushes.
