Banding Steelies!

Featured Replies

Hi

First of all I can't thank this site and users enough for all the help I always get with all my stupid questions.

Anyway back to the stupid questions! I love my spiders but need winter wheels!

This is my first real thought about different set of wheels so i don't really understand all the ET stuff people talk about. I have a set of standard 16" Beetle Steelies 205 55 16 thats all i know. If I was to get them banded does anyone know how many inches i would have to increase the lip for them to sit flush with the arches on the MKI Octavia? Im guessing it has something to do with increasing the ET of the wheel.

Thanks

Toast

Yes everything to do with the ET and width.

However banded (or even wide) wheels are a bad idea with a narrow tyre (205), if you really just want them to sit flush then put some hubcentris spacers on, cheaper and safer than banding your wheels ..... plus they will retain more of their s/h value, if you decide to sell them again later.

Speak to the guys in the know is probably a better idea as you'll get mixed reactions on here no doubt.

The et will be stamped on the center of the steals. Banding them if done profetionally is safe and running a small amount of stretch on your tyres as also safe, although I wouldn't recommend running stretched tyres on winter wheels as you need them to be a safe as your can for winter weather.

205 is the tire that is currently on them. If I got them banded I'd get a fatter tire as I like fat wheels. I have my spiders on hubcentrics at the moment but I really like the banded steelies look. So instead of spacers I'd get the lip banded to be flush with the arches.

I say do it!

Just a thought - if you like banded steelies why not put your summers on those, then run your winters on the spiders ?

There was a set of banded steels on here for sale fairly recently...
