"Clunk" sound from rear of car over bumpy roads

Featured Replies

Morning all. Im having trouble trying to locate the cause of a slight "clunk/knock" coming from the rear of my car. I tried taking out the spare wheel and tool kit etc aswell as the parcel shelf but the sound is still there. I even tried folding down the rear seats to no avail. Im 90% sure the sound is coming from inside the car as opposed to the rear suspension. Any other suggestions?

I had the same thing on my car, turned out to be the boot hatch door itself that needed adjusting. That maybe your problem too.

Could it not be the upper mounts of the suspention? Because its right up in the wheel arch it might sound like its comin from inside the car

How is the boot adjusted? Are you referring to the black stops that screw outwards?

Good point. Im going to get the suspension links, bushes, top mounts etc. checked just in case it is transferring through the car making it sound like its coming from inside.

I had a similar problem with an unidentified noise coming from the rear of the car. Triedgoing over the same bit of road removing parcel shelf then spare wheel, jack etc.

Eventually traced the problem I was having to the boot lid itself, but by simply winding the black rubber stoppers on the bottom of the boot out a bit I was able to cure the noise.

I think if you wind them out it holds the boot more firmly against the sill and stops any vibrations that may be causing the noise.

Hope this helps

UPDATE.

After putting up with the noise for all this time (and the osf door making the same noise over the last few months) it looks like I may have cured it. I've lubricated all of the door and aperture seals with rubber grease (we had some specific bmw grease at work which is normally 25 quid for a small tub!) the noise is now 90% gone. Anyone having trouble locating odd noises should definitely try this. :)
