Rising Oil Temp

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Firstly my car is an Octy 1 vrs 2002 with stage 2 map and all the supporting mods.

I have been recently told that my valve stem seals need replacing after I noticed I was getting some blue smoke from the exhaust on occasions so planning on having them done very soon. However, within the last couple of weeks I have noticed that when on a motorway steady speed and revs my oil temp rises at times up to 120-130 degrees way above the norm 80-90. She has plenty of oil (5-40 fully synth) and seems to run as normal. Could this be due to the valve stem seals or something new?

Where are you getting the temp readings from?

Also, when was the oil/filter last changed? Has the oil pick up ever been replaced? Not that this will directly affect the oil temps, but it is good maintenance and it is one less thing to worry about.

Valve seals will give a puff of smoke, more so on start up from cold, or after the engine has been stood for a while.

Cheers for the reply Steve.

I am getting puffs of Blue when engine has been running for a while whilst driving. Local vag garage had a look and immediately pointed to valve stem seals.

Had oil and filter changed just under 3 months ago and had oil pick up done at the same time.

Getting the readings from a pillar mount gauge I have had fitted to the car for a couple of years nearly

Dodgy gauge if not you have got a serious issue as them tempa are normally track car flat out temps lol

To be honest dodgy gauge or wiring is what I was wondering as she still pulls like a train and feels no different. I just have to keep an eye on oil level as she is burning a bit due to stem seals I am told
