Best fuel system treatment?

Featured Replies

Looking at buying some for my VRS, and my dad also wants some for his Astra 1.7 DTi, any recommendations for both petrol and diesel cleaners please? We've both always used Forte stuff, and it seems to make a little difference, just wondered if there's anything better out there, or if it's all snake oil, lol! ;)

I'm cleaning the throttle body on mine this weekend anyway, so thought I may as well do the whole system whilst I'm on.

tbh i'd only do it if you are going to replace your fuel filter.

do a treatment a tank or so before changing filter - unless your car is running poorly it seem to be snake oil like if you ask me

I periodically dose up my old petrol Felly with Redex injection and have just tried the advanced option, albeit that's only dosed every 3000 miles. Tbh not really sure how much difference they make but assume it probably does some good and a few quid spent now & again doesn't break the bank. For some reason I always seem to associate fuel additives to older vehicles but imagine they apply equally to newer/high performance engines.

Thanks for the replies, think I'll treat it to a new fuel filter too then. :)

Millers all the way.

Forte

Used Millers diesel treatment. Around that time I managed to get the car to go into limp mode twice by getting the engine up to temp, switching off for 5 minutes, restarting then booting it after a couple of minutes. Hasn't happened since. No idea why or what.

Car definitely drove a bit better at first when I did it but I don't notice the difference any more to be honest. I've just finished the bottle and I doubt i'll be running it again for a while. Not because I think its crap but because I think its done its job. I replaced the fuel filter 12k miles ago when I got the car and I've replaced it about 2000 miles ago after running 10 litres of veg oil (supposedly displaces dirt in the fuel lines) in the tank and the filter was literally spotless. I already had the new one so I changed it anyway :)

On petrol engines fuel additives are a bad idea, period. If your injector nozzles need cleaning, those cheap ultrasonic jewellery cleaners are superb, but the rest of the system is best left alone. (all bar replacing the filter)

the best cleaners are from Liqui Moly, were scientific tested in Germany by goverment institutions, was an entire article somewhere, hope I can find it.They got an award for impressive results

those are the 2 cleaners one for petrol one for diesel

I use the one for petrol for 3 years and is very good.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at the Liqui Moly, that was one I'd already heard good things about. :)

forte all the way for me

I've used BG44k in my Fiesta Zetec S and it made a big difference. I'll probably use the same stuff in my Vrs when it comes back from the garage.

How so?

How so?

Because its done 120k on a diet of probably supermarket 95 ron most of its life. Based on my experience with BG44k i know it works and i wouldnt put any old crap in my car, Redex and Millers isnt strong enough. Once its used a can i'll be using SUL only, ready for when its mapped. I've not heard a bad report on the stuff and i'm normally sceptical of products like this. The Fiesta had done 112k with a full service history but still benefited with the treatment, it even got 42mpg out of it after i used it!

I'm really interested to see back-back dyno tests of these products, are there any out there?

this is about cleaners not boosters :giggle:

Millers and Forte are the best. Redex is c**p.

Having used Redex for some time I'd be interested to know what lies behind your view of it + how do Millers/Forte compare price wise? Cheers.

I don't know about extra additives, but 5th gear done a test on fancy fuels, shell optimax etc, compared with regular, and supermarket fuels and dyno'd them back to back. It confirmed what I believed for a while, that there is a noticeable difference and benefit to buying the good stuff. One test showed an extra 10 bhp over supermarket but I'm sure it was on a diesel though, but mines always seems better with the good stuff and probably works out cheaper than the additives. Although if you have a diesel, modern diesels are aparently too clean as diesels run better and quieter on thicker stuff, so a trick is to add a wee cap of modern 2 stroke oil in and that makes your engine sweet albeit a little more Smokey.

I wouldn't use any additives in anything, i'd just run a couple of tanks of decent fuel through it and maybe change fuel filter,

Modern diesel pumps self distruct if run on anything but diesel is put through them as it uses it to lubricate the pump and i wouldn't know if it has the same lubrication properties

Do you mean the two stroke oil? As this is used as complete lubrication for two stroke engines. I agree totally about fragile fuel pumps on diesels as my mondeo I used to have self destructed when I let it run out of diesel one time, oops. Sorry hijack over.
