Would I be mad to chop in my current Estate for a new one?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I think the answer is yes to this, I purchased my elegance 4x4 Estate 170 a while back, I regret not going for a few options such as the panaromanic sunroof, auto opening boot (this being my first estate, didn't realise how useful this would be) plus I don't really like the colour I purchased it in. I didn't actually see in the flesh as there were hardly any estates around, as a car the 4x4 estate is a dream to drive hence why I would consider another one.

When I was at Goodwood I saw the Elegance L&K at Goodwood in white and loved it, through drive the deal I can get a car with the full spec I want for 28k (4x4 170 L&K) in white.

I went to have a look at a few other brands recently, mazda CX5, BMW 530d which made me realise how great the Skoda is and how amazing value for money is.

My thoughts are that I keep the Car to the end of the 3 year period and chop it in or change it now, as it stands the Superb ticks all the boxes from what I want in a car and is very reasonable to run.

Is it worth doing, ultimately I always use my car allowance so I wouldn't look at it as too much of a hit on me personal finance wise.

What are the waiting list now on these and is there a new model on the horizon in the next year?

You know in your brain the economics of depreciation; always worse in the early years.

You know in your heart why you'd like a new car.

For millionaires, the heart can win. For the poorest, the brain must win,

Most of us are in the middle. Brain would say keep a modern car for six years at least. My compromise is usually to change around four. Only you can do the heart-brain balance, but don't bother trying to justify the change with logic or money! ;-)

sensible words StuartAB, will stick with my current one as it wouldn't make sense.

I will just hang around for the Superb MK3 :sun:

Like you I did my sums before going for a new Octavia Hatch L&K 1.8 tsi dsg.

I specced it carefully against the new Mazda CX-5, a very well received car, lots of space, driver friendly but very tall I noted with its shark fin antenna. The equivalents wer £19,100 for the Octavia new and £28.400 for the CX-5 to get equivalent engine power.

Furthermore, a similar spec against a BMW 320i new was £32,000 for same extras eg xenons, electric seats etc.

No matter which way you look at it, prudence would prevent you from paying the extra for a "name" or "style". So whichever way you jump ( either keeping your current car or opting for a new Superb), you have done the right maths to get your best option.

If you have an allowanc that you are happy to use then what's the extra cost to change now?

Since there is nothing close to change it to except the same again or maybe a MKIII but when) that would make this perfect car a potential keeper so you could recover that extra cost by just keeping it an extra year or two.

That L&K at Goodwood did look good and the L&K brown leather looked a lot better in the flesh than i thought it would.

Does it have to be brand new what if a pre reg or V.nearly new was around would that be more/less of an hit.

5 brown 14x4 on autotrader so no good but all not that much cheaper if anything,

given the above Is there a market for yours for those that cannot wait might not be that big a hit if recently is very revent/low miles

I have the sunroof and have to say that haven't really used it that much (especially this summer!!) and in fact on a hot day on a long drive I need the blind closed! As for the Auto boot, I specc'd it but it was missed off so I got great reduction as well as some advice (not from dealer! but industry expert) that it is component that is really expensive to fix if it fails in later life ( I'm keeping mine for a very very long time I hope!) if any of that helps.

The advances in electronic wizadry being made in VAG seen in Audi and UP! etc like HUD, night vision, city emergency braking etc make me think that in about 3- 5 years there will be some really useful and thought through drivers aids for all! (at sensible prices!)

Facelift model due next year! that would be a good time.

In my opinion you would be mad. You are basically looking at replacing like for like??

Facelift model due next year! that would be a good time.

Just ordered a new Superb Estate - 2 dealers told me definately no facelift next year - and would probably be 2015......have I been given sales patter?

Dave

I think the consensus of opinion is that the dealers are right in what they say...no facelift next year.

I've heard similar stories regarding facelift model, which if it happens will be towards late 2013, for 2014 sales, however there is also the talk, that the new model superb will be launched for 2015, and if this happens, chances are no facelift will take place.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses, I've been thinking about this today and most of the things I want are fairly superficial i.e. sunroof, I was actually thinking about mismash's comments with regards to how often he actually opens the sunroof, the only time I open the windows is when moving slowly or the dogs are in the car (boot) so how often would I actually open it.

Likewise as someone stated, the electric tailboot is just another bit of electrics to go wrong.

I've come to my senses, given the advance in car tech and engines since the Superb was released it would be crazy to change now, think I will hold out to the end of my contract and then decide whether to keep it or move to something new, hopefully a new superb will be out.

Despite my whinging about little things every time I look at the premium brands I feel a bit dissapointed compared to the Superb, this is coming from a long term BMW fan. I was also considering the new F31 320d M sport estate in a spec similar to my superb with a few more bits 38k at list.................. whilst I could afford it I certainly couldn't justify it and I'm certainly not excited enough to part with my cash for it like I would be an M3.

As I've always said the Superb isn't the most exciting car but you just can't fault it for drive, comfort, quality and equipment, the dogs also love it
