high pitched whine when in 5th gear and foot off gas

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 2004 fabia vRS and along with all its other issues as it is very problematic ( a Pig is the best description) when I put the car into 5th gear it makes a very loud High pitched whine until I put my foot back on the accelerator its stops but if I remove my foot again and let it coast the noise returns, I have also noticed a whistle which is not always present coming from the drivers side, I think its the back wheel and a knocking noise also intermittent again from drivers side which I cant tell where that is coming from but it sounds like the middle of the car any ideas please as I am really sick of visiting garages with the beast now  thank you

Hi

Have you tried a gearbox oil change at all? Might cut the whineing noise down? I have just swapped a gearbox out for a customer which had a whine in 5th Iv not stripped the box yet to see what the problem was. As for knocking noise sound it could be a bush Or drop link hope this help

Hi Speedy,

I have just had drop links track rod ends and suspension arms changed 2 new tyres and all re-aligned problem was there before and after the work never does it when garage has it :wall: as is always the case lol I really am stumped with it

Are you sure it's not the rear axle bushes? Or even your exhaust knocking on the axle? Where do you live I can stick it on the ramp for you and we both can look over it then?

Get any whining noises looked at asap!

I ignored a whine in 1st/2nd gear that was the same as you decribed (only whine when engaging the gear or over-run).

Now my box is being rebuilt. It was the bearings that had failed.

Hi Speedy I live in Yorkshire :-( but my other half is pretty good at this kind of thing if he knows where to look, its a bit strange as it passed its MOT in June no advisorys but this issue was there then it might be because I had just paid them to replace the suspension bits month before and asked then to repair its engine coolant sensor so they may have felt a bit sorry for me

thanks Phil I should have known it would be a BIG EXPENSIVE job never simple on that pig wish I had never bought it :(

Might be worth checking the oil level and condition.

Does it also do it in 6th gear?
