Rear Screen Wash

Featured Replies

Today I decided to top up the screen wash, and in testing it discovered that the rear wash was not delivering.

Tried it several times. Wiggled a pin in each nozzle in case blocked. Nope.

Then got a bong and washer bottle low. Funny, just filled that up. So got watering can, filled resevoir again, then noted lots of white foam on bottom tray.

This time operated rear wash with bonnet open and this time could see water spraying up from somewhere, over fans etc. Unfortunately arm not long enough to peer under bonnet whilst operating relevant leaver and there is never an assistant around when you need one.

So pipe must be off or something that supplies rear screen wash.

Did a search on here and found that sometimes a pipe comes off in rear boot area on LHS - but his is fine (I hope).

Has anyone had a problem with leaks at engine compartment, pipe off etc with this system ??

Sounds like to me either the pipe has split or popped off the bottom of the washer bottle.

The easiest way to access the underneath of the washer bottle is from under the wheelarch. The few extra minutes it'll take you to remove the plastic inner wheelarch will easily be made back up than if you try and take the job on from under the bonnet.

I'm fairly sure the Octavia has one pump, it spins one way for the front washer and then spins in reverse to power the rear washer.

One word of advice, the rear washer is renowned for blocking. When blocked the back pressure when operating the pump quite often pops/blows the pipe connectors somewhere along its journey. I think you've been lucky as yours has gone under the bonnet and not inside the cars interior.

When you fix the leak lift up the black plastic cover on the rear wiper arm spindle, the washer jet just pulls off. Operate the rear washer and you should get a jet of water into the air. If you don't get any output with the jet in place then it'll confirm the source of your problem.

It has been known that even with a needle down them the jets can still be blocked so don't dismiss the jet as being the problem too early!

Hopefully this should be an easy fix. Good luck!

Are your windscreen jets working?

As silver has suggested above, sounds like a pipe has popped off the washer bottle.

Hi

Yes the front works fine.

Thanks for your help. So its best to remove the wheel arch and go in from there, thanks.

Also check your spare wheel well as it might be full of screen wash if the pipe has come off which is behind the cd changer panel.

If you remove the grill cover for the towing hook, then remove the pannel next to it (or the fog lamp where fitted) you can see the motor and bottom of the washer bottle. Easier than removing the inner wing if it's just a pipe popped off.
