Strange buzzing rattling noise behind bulkhead...

Featured Replies

OK need a bit of help...

Oct II 4x4 2,0pd 140 has just started making a very strange noise - almost like a rattle / wet fart noise from the bulkhead area behind the instrument cluster by the sounds of things. It initially started on the overrun only and then under part throttle but now seems to be occurring more frequently throughout the rev range.

It is a constant pitch and doesn;t seem to vary with engine speed and can occasionally happen when stationary if the engine is revved. Mostly noticeable from inside the car.

I initially thought something was loose as it was recently serviced and a new cam belt fitted so I had a look and found a loose fuel line that I've sorted. I then thought turbo actuator, then egr but the car is still running fine and pulling like a train (this started a week ago) with no warning lights.

So I'm not sure now - are there any heatshields that could have worked loose there or anything that could be an issue from the cambelt change?

I'm aiming to have a good look round tomorrow ut any pointers would be gratefully received as I'm off on holiday to Belfast in it on Tuesday!!!

Well I think I may have found the problem... the bottom engine to engine mount bolt had come completely undone :( but fortunately it is so long that it hit the bodywork before dropping out completely :whew:. Lets just say that it is now done up b***ard tight!

I was all geared up to strip the EGR and clean it but luckily I decided to have a good feel round beforehand - just in case. I also found a loose brake pipe so that is now clipped and cable tied back on place as well!

Not sure if this would have been undone to get at the dpf or not but looks like it has been loose for some time but only just started hitting the bodywork and causing the noise!

Anyhow - now off for a drive to confirm that was it!

Sorted...

Glad you found it and at no cost :)

Rattles and squeaks are a nightmare to trace. Mines all good so far (famous last words)

they can be hard to pin down - often that is harder than fixing what you do find.

my "dashboard" buzz/rattle seems to have disappeared since I firmed up the plastic tube leading to the mirror, which is nowhere near where I thought the buzz was coming from
