Engine needing a litre of oil every 3 months

Featured Replies

Hi guys, My VRS has been using oil all the time I have owned it. It uses about 1 litre every 3 to 4 months. I have no oil leaks and have never seen blue smoke from the rear. So where is it going and is this something to be worried about. Cheers guys !!!!

What sort of milage is that ??

Mines using lately, @140k I'm using around half a litre every 1000miles which lately is around every 3 weeks

You must do a compression test first...

How many miles between topping up and what oil does it have in it to start with,

Plus what are your engine breather pipes like,

It needs topping up between 1500 / 2000 miles and the oil I use is 5w/30w semi. It was on 5w/30 full but The mechanic who serviced the car 4000 mile ago said for this age of engine and miles he recommended using semi synthetic. As far as checking breather pipes that is something I have not looked at

just make sure whatever you use is to a vw oil spec

Mine uses a bit too. Breathers are perfect, well maintained, 63,000 miles, no smoke, good emissions, no leaks, bit of a concern I must say...

Take a close look on the valves cover gasket and the chain tensioner gasket,on the right side and the back side.Take off the plastic covers,

Mine was loosing alot of oil on both gaskets ,and I have'nt see the oil because was leaking to the back of the engine. The turbo, even the gearbox was flooded with oil

Hmm mine's never needed a top-up between oil changes so far. 112,000km, 8 years.

Mine is same as robs and mine goes 18 -20k between services.

Think some engines have diff tolerances?

My old mk4 astra used oil. Every 400 or soiles it needed a littlr top up.

Had a good look around the engine, like I said in the post no oil on floor and engine and box bone dry, looks like I will have to live with the fact it uses oil, simples ;)

Must be burning it? Blue smoke?

Perhaps a compression test would help.

Nope none at all and when the plugs where changed on the last service they where showing all is well.

Its going out the exhaust, its not vanishing into thin air :D
