The mongrel's turbo has suddenly started WOOOSHING under boost

Featured Replies

Only noticed it today. A very loud WHOOOSH noise under power. Boost "seems" to be the same as always but this noise has got me wondering what the hell it could be. I am most worried about it potentially being a crack in the exhaust manifold, but it sounds more turbo'ey to me....

Does it sound like you have an air compressor under bonnet. And mpg. Gone down? Then it be leak in pipe work.

Hole in manifold would make exhaust sound blowy i wud av thought

Sounds like someone is pressing on a tyre valve, letting air out.PPPFFFFFFFFFFT! Yet, the car still seemed to be making boost. Never blown a boost hose before so curious to find out if it is that.

I've had a couple of split boost pipes and had a whooshy, whistley, air leaky type of noise but no major drop in performance. boost pipe poping off was another matter altogether

I split one other day started similar sound then got louder and power drop as split got worse. Was the pipe coming from turbo to pancake pipe

Well, checked all hoses in the engine bay and all fine, including the one behind the front right foglight. Then I checked the intake hose from the engine bay and it was a bit too wobbly for my liking. Sure enough it had come off the turbo intake. Bit odd why it had done so as no pressure. Can only assume the pipework isn't sitting right and as there is no barb on the intake of the turbo, it wiggles off fairly easily. I got under it and re-made the join. Hopefully it will stay on now. So my whoooshing was the turbo taking in unfiltered air right at the turbo intake, haha! :D Any excuse to chuck it on the ramps! I also don't do "lying on the tarmac" - only carpet is good enough for me!

Really like the look of your car! What are those wheels?

At a guess OZ Superlegerras, lovely wheel, strong and light. Had the darker grey anthracite 17" ones on my old mk3 Ibiza Cupra years ago and then changed to the OZ Seatsport Cupra R 16" wheels. Sometimes I miss that car lol.

unfiltered air  not good for the impellor side of the turbo

and i do not wish to know if you have got any carpet burns from working under the mongrel :bandit: :bandit:

any chance of a picture of which pipe it was

My pipework is all custom, so imagine a 90 degree silicone bend, heatwrapped with reflective tape, with a jubilee clip. :) It had just slid off the intake side of my 2260vk turbo.

The wheels are indeed OZ superleggera. 8" wide, nice wheels! Very light indeed!

I only did about 2 miles driving with it like it, so doubt it had the chance to suck anything major into the turbo. :)

Could it be the turbo gaskets ?

teehee - problem solved. Although car hasn't moved since I did it. I used the Porker to commute to work this morning, and go to play golf. :)
