SETTING A ROUTE IN COLUMBUS SAT NAV

Featured Replies

Having just installed my Columbus, i am struggling to set a route.

For example, i live in sunny stockton-on-tees (where a gold medalist comes from) and input a route to dorchester, dorset. I gives me 3 options, all go around Birmingham. I want to go a differnt route via M1 J15A.

How can i get it to give me that route??. On Tom Toms i can set a 'via' location.

ALSO, is it possible to just have the sat nav on without the radio, cd etc playing in the background.

All suggestions and comments welcome.

Second question I can help with: turn the volume down until it goes off (not while sat nav is giving instructions). This also pauses media & CD position.

First question I shall await someone else (I could do with knowing but I haven't looked to see as of yet).

But Plan B could be just to drive that route and let the sat nav auto update (not the best solution I know).

You can define stopovers which allow you to go 'via' somewhere, either exactly or close to. Its on the extras menu under Nav. Pick a point as near to the relevant junction as possible and Robert will be a close male relative.

Hope that helps

Adam

Yes you can set a stopover destination and where in the sequence of locations you want it to be.

On a similar vain, does anyone know how to set the route type (fastest, shortest, most economical) to always default to fastest?

Mine seems to default to shortest (usually) which ends up going down lots of very small country lanes... Economical is not much better.

At the moment I choose my destination, pick from the three routes then set the route type and she then does not give me a choice of route.

Anyone know where to set the default or a way of selecting fastest before choosing the destination?

The default route type can be set in the Navigation settings menu (somewhere!). Definitely do-able as I've done it to mine (it's set to fastest which shows as a red colour on the map), but I can't remember where exactly it is. I'll take a look and post back.

Thanks. I had a look around and couldn't find anything to change it other than after entering the destination.

From your description I'm thinking that the three route options are shown in different colours: Do they equate to a fastest (red), most economical (orange) & quickest (blue) for example?

Ok. Switch on the Columbus (ignition doesn't need to be on), wait while it warms up.... .... ... ... press Map button, press Navigation, then Route Options, then it's on the next screen under Route>.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Red is definitely fastest as that's what mine is on.

My manual says:

Fast calculates the fastest route to the destination, even if a detour is necessary - appears in orange

Shortest shortest route to the destination even if a longer driving time is required - appears in red

Most economical calculates the quickest route possible over the shortest route – displayed in blue

Think I need to get a manual for my Columbus!

I have a PDF Columbus manual somewhere i think, if you want I will dig it out, pm me your email.

I'm double check, the missus might have changed it!

Press settings button, select map then set your fastest shortest or economical from there

My manual says:

Fast calculates the fastest route to the destination, even if a detour is necessary - appears in orange

Shortest shortest route to the destination even if a longer driving time is required - appears in red

Most economical calculates the quickest route possible over the shortest route – displayed in blue

I have

green 3

red 2

blue 1

and have set mine to fastest rout, so what do I select to get to a destination quickly

Mine seems to default to red as the fastest route, orange as the shortest & blue as the most economical!

When I switch to having only one option displayed, it comes up as the fastest (which is currently set in route options). If I change route options then select a route it will change the colour displayed.

Can't find any options to change the default permanently in the setup menu under either maps or navigation.

Mine too, the manual is wrong if the quotes above are correct.

Will try to find a setting for the default - would be useful to know.

I've looked and can't find a way of changing the default permanently.

I think I have if I allow the Columbus to only show one route choice (then it seems to default to last selected journey type).

For now as long as I know that red is the quickest, I shall just use that option (most of the time).

I've just been out with mine and couldn't see a way to set a default either, but you're right, it does resort to the last one used when you don't ask it to give alternative routes. I'll also be leaving mine as it is.

I like the option of the three routes, but didn't realise they were the three route types.

Think ill reset mine to one route and ensure that it is set to fastest.

If I want to go a particular way, I'll set an approximate new destination as a waypoint.
